decode needed on rear end housing
Hey guys,
Research leads me to believe a rear end I'm chasing down is from 1969; however, I don't want any doubts. Please decode according to this:
A casting number on the pumpkin is 394139.
Another stamp shows CFD7.

Also, here's a shot inside.

codes
Ned the axle tube codes (passenger tube rear of tube between the spring perch and the cast center section) and the numbers and letters off the ring gear edge since you have that open too.
If thr gears are original to the housing they will match the axle tube code and the year off the gears wil ltell you the year of the housing...etc.

Thanks, Jim.
I don't actually have this rear end (yet), and have to rely on pictures sent by the current owner. I do know the code = TO. Therefore, it's a 3:91 ratio per the 1970 chassis manual. I guess this ratio was used for several years.
Brian T. told me on another forum the axle seal (pressed into the axle) resembled that of '67-'69 cars. Therefore, it's looking like this came off a 1969 car.
However, per Supercars Unlimited tech page, it's possible early production 1970 442 models may have used that same axle style. The owner claims it came off a '70 car, too.
If the ring gear was replaced at some point with one dated from 1970, is there any other way to verify the year?
Lastly, did the TO coded rear ends only get put in W cars in 1970?

year
Thye year should be on the ring gear edge. If it is 1969 or 1970 it will be a 28 spline axle unit. if it si 67 68 ti could be a 31 spline with the 672 carrier posi unit.
Axle bearings in the 1969-70 will be oiled bearing with external seal on the axle shaft. If it is 1967-1968 it will be sealed bearing with internal axle seal in the axle tube.
Hope some of this info helps you ID what year it is. Jim
