64 Cutlass Axle Question
So I'm installing a 455 into my 64 Cutlass with a turbo 400, I'm wondering how the stock rear end will hold up. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a cheap posi rear end, but really have no idea what to replace it with or what car it could come from. Anyone have any suggestions, or good link resources? I saw a 12 bolt posi from an el camino on Craigslist for $600, good deal, would it work well in the Cutlass?

64 rear end
Yep your car really has a small wheel well for tire and room for error.
IF you are buying aftermarket rims you can use 1968-1972 rears in the older a-body - just use an extra 1/2" to 1" negative backspacing on the rim.
You can use 1971 1972 cutlass or Buick skylark rears under the car or 12 bolt chevy
The original rear you have under the car WILL hold up to quite a bit of punishment on the street - it is the track with sticky tires and high stall or stick shift , then you will certainly start to have issues.
Best thing you can do to any rear you use is to rebearing and use aftermarket posi and gears.
we have build plenty of 8.2 BOP rears for 455 pontiac, buick and olds powered cars and they held up fine at the track(for shows etc) and street.
Take care, Jim
