1971 Toronado differential

Does anyone out there know how to externally tell what the gear ratio is on my 1971 Toronado fwd trans/diff? I thought there was two different ones available?

The '71 dealer specs book shows only a single "power team" for the Toronado. 455 V-8, TH 400 transmission, 3.07 gear ratio.

Thanks for that, I guess I heard wrong. I wonder if there was any other ratios available for any other year or maybe in Cadillac.

Yes, beginning the following year. In 1972, the Toronado standard gear ratio was 2.73. The 3.07 ratio was an option that was recommended if doing trailer towing and was required on California cars. It was the same for 1973. I don't have the info for later years on hand.

The early years, I think 66-67 were lower. If my memory is right they were a 3.23

I would like to find one of these 3.21 units or one with higher numbers if it will fit my 71 trans.

I probably will go for a 3.42 or 3.55 depending on availability. It's for my project vista that I bought a few years ago and haven't gotten very far on. I rebuilt the motor and trans but need to redesign the rear suspension for better safety. The previous builder took the frame and drivetrain from a 71 toro and cut the vista frame out of the back of the vista and put the toro one in.
