1967 F85

Hello, thanks for welcoming me to your site.I recently bought a 1967 F85 2 door post top with a 330 and a 4 barrel carb but the car also has a 12 bolt rear end which to me was some thing reserved for higher dollar GM muscle cars.Is this a normal item for an F85?Thanks in advance Seymog.

If the cover is smooth, no inverted big V wrinkle, and smooth between the bolts (no ribs in cover), it is the Type O or Olds manufactured rear which was used in some A bodycars beginning in May 66 or thereabouts.

Actually, it was the middle of the 1967 model year. This is the Type O axle, used from mid-67 though the 1970 model year. It is unique to the Olds A-body cars. It has a 12 bolt cover, but it is not a "12 bolt" axle. The Chevy 12 bolt has an 8.875" ring gear held on with 12 bolts. The Type O has an 8.5" ring gear held on with only 10 bolts. Contrary to popular belief, the number of bolts on the cover is not what makes it a 12 bolt, it's the number of bolts holding the ring gear. Most people get this confused.

Joe, I think the type O axle was available in some B body cars as well during that time. Either that or the '69 Delta I had with the type O axle had it swapped by a previous owner.

Welcome! Post cars are very cool......
Good responses here, but to answer your question directly: Yes the "12-bolt" (O axle) was an option even on the F-85. So even if it isn't common, it is more than possible.

Oh, and as a new member you must be told to post pics.............to avoid "the curse".....

hello.

i am new here and to computers but not new to Oldsmobile's. i have enjoyed Oldsmobile's for 20 years. i got my first car when i was 15. i am 34 now, it was a Rallye 350 4 speed. i drove it all through my high school years. just glad i took care of it while being a teen. i done a frame off in 1999 and not drove it much since then. i will drive it more this year. i also have a Quad 442 W-41. it is car #9 of the 204.

OK i can't figure out how to add a picture. i thought i figured it out but i guess not. also you will have to bare with me, i can't spell worth a hoot.

I can show you the May 66 Service Guild Training Manual Supplement, and in the July 66 issue that cover the Type O axle. It states that the diff was being used as of then in some cars. Therefore it did NOT start in mid-67 but in mid 66.

Good to know, thanks. Does it say if the 66 applications were A-body or big cars?
