1962 F-85 Drive Shaft

Hi all,

Upon the recommendation of someone on this board, I posted an ad on 442.com for a slip yoke ball seat for my F-85 a few weeks ago. I haven't had much luck, but I did receive about 7 emails from different people all from the same address in London. Needless to say, I think something might be scammy about that.

Anyways, i have had the shaft out of this car for nearly a year. It is totally undriveable in its current state. My drive shaft guy has the shaft, an can re-tube it, but neither him, nor I can find the parts for the slip yoke CV/U-joint thingy.

Anyone have any recommendations?

Much Thanks,

Bill

I wonder if they used the same center support and bearing system from 57 all the way up to 64. I have a 57 unit and can't find enough information to confirm if it is the same. Does anyone know?

64 was the last year for those I believe. They came on all the X frame cars. Had 1 in a 64' Lesabre.

As far as I know, the shaft setup on my car was only used on the 61-63 F-85's. Might have also been used on the same period Buick Specials, but I don't know for sure.

Maybe the '64 did use the same pieces. If it did, it will let me widen my parts search a bit. I'm still not too optimistic. I figured I would have found something by now. Hell, Jay Leno can get parts for much weirder cars.

I asked my drive shaft guy about maybe replacing the whole CV head with a similar but non-identical modern unit but he didn't seem to like the idea much. I'm not worried about the drive shaft being original, although I'm trying to keep it as original as possible. Anyone think this might work?

Well I found those U-joints at rockauto, but unfortunately it seems they don't have the rest of the parts for the joint.

Do you have pictures on the bad parts so I can compare to the 57 parts I have to see if they are the same?

Did you ever find anything on this? I've been looking for the rubber bushing that goes over the center bearing in the drive shaft for months now. Any help would be appreciated.

there is a guy on the jetfire forum that could help. Would you happen to be a member there? All 61-63 F 85, Cutlass and Jetfire info there. Not real active there but someone will likely be able to help.

I think there is a 1963 in a yard here - I will try to get there and check it out. So that is the center carrier bearing for the drive shaft correct? Jim

Hi Jim,

It is the center carrier bearing. I got a brand new bearing from Rock Auto but I'm looking for that rubber bushing that goes around it. My bushing is in rough shape. If you have it I'm interested.

Thanks,
Al
