I'm new to Classic Oldsmobile. I just got a 69 olds cutlass, I've been having problems finding out some history about my car. I've been trying to decode my vin (342879lll37l2). I would like to find out every little detail i can. Any help and tips, will be greatly appreciated.

You do have something off there, no build plant for L.

An (1969) Olds chassis service manual is nearly mandatory here and a good place to start to learn about the car itself, they can be found on evilbay and at dealers online.
The Fisher Body manual is good to have too.

Ditto what Jamesbo said! But I'd like to add: *Please* make your titles descriptive of what you're posting. "Any info and tips would be helpful" does not let anyone know what's inside your post. This is a far too common faux pas on forums. "Check this out" and "I was wondering" are other examples of poor titles. Try "VIN decode for '69 Cutlass". Makes navigating much more efficient for all.

Congrats and welcome. If those are supposed to be the number "1" in your VIN and not the letter "L", then this is a Canadian-built Olds and should have a real Chevy 12 bolt 8.875" ring gear axle under it. Also, since it was Canadian-built, you can get information on the original options, etc. Though it's a Chevelle site, this link applies to any Canadian-built GM car:

42= Cutlass Supreme
87= Holiday coupe (2D Hardtop)
9= 1969 model year
1= Oshawa Ontario assembly plant
113712= car sequential VIN

 

Thanks i'll try and be more descriptive in the future. I just found the id plate on the fire wall, but i'm not sure which number it is. My car is made in canada. I'm also trying to find out what trans is in it. I'm having problems finding the number.

It took awhile, they were so dirty. The top number is 69 39287 0s525016, the mid number is 977 11d 6325, bottom number is c80d55157m38.

 

Let's try to decode:

69 = 1969 model year
39287 is really 34287, which matches your VIN (Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupe)
OS = Oshawa, CA assembly plant (also matches the "1" in your VIN)
525016 = Fisher Body sequential build number (which is not supposed to match the VIN)

977 = Interior trim code (I don't have that handy at the moment)
11D = Sounds like a build date (fourth week of Nov, 1968) but this is usually in the third row. I guess the GM of Canada tags are laid out differently?
6325 = Sounds like paint codes. 63 would be Palamino Gold. I don't know about 25 however. Is this a stripe or upper color code?

C80 = This is probably C60, for A/C
D55 = Floor console
157 = ??? Note that this does not appear to be a valid option code, which is usually a letter and two digits. I can't even find anything close. You might want to look again.
M38 = TH350 automatic trans

 

Thanks alot for decoding those body codes for me. It really helped. I was wondering if you guys would know of any way to figure out what # this car was in how ever many were built. When i got this car i wanted to find out the rough info on it, but now i want to know as much as i can.

 

There were 29,193 Cutlass Supreme Holiday Coupes made in '69. Unfortunately, there is no figures available to further break down the production numbers on one with your particular options.
