column shift to floor shift

If i swap to bucket seats can i leave the column shift in there and just use a cable shifted floor shifter? Or is it required that change to a floor shift steering column. Im not looking to go OEM, just to an aftermarket floor shift.

Most folks simply drill out the pin that retains the lever and remove the lever from the column. The problem you will have is that the backup light and neutral safety switch is on the column. Factory floor shift cars used a backdrive linkage that connected to the base of the column and actuated the switch. This was done because the feds required the shifter to be locked with the steering column. If you do not replicate this backdrive linkage, you will need to fabricate some alternate NSS and backup switches connected to your shifter.

I had a B&M "Megashifter", ratchet style cable shifter that includes neutral safety and backup switches. They use micro or limit switches. Great shifters, never had any problems. Good design and quality. I changed the gear selection indicator lamp to an LED that made it even more cool. If you want to slap gears every now and then, this is the one.
