1972 Cutlass S

Hey Everyone!
I have a Cutlass S that I've had since 1995. It has 46,000 original documented miles on it. It was the typical old lady had it in a garage story. Long story short, she had the trunk repainted at some time while it was in her possession. It does not have a rocket emblem around the trunk lock. I've seen a lot of Cutlass S vehicles that have the emblem. I know my 71 Supreme doesn't have this. Can anyone tell me if it should have the emblem or not? Was it an option?

Thanks!
Scott

Scott, I am of the thinking that the rocket emblem around the trunk was on 1970 S cars. The 1971s had a solid piece saying OLDSMOBILE across the bottom (not to be confused with the individual letters on the Supreme) and the 72s had none of the above. I think it should have nothing but a script Cutlass in the lower right.

Keep in mind that every Cutlass you see on line or in person has probably been repainted, and the handful that haven't been turned into Faux Four Twos have likely still been messed with or had the trunk lid replaced.

The parts book says that for the 1972 model year, the only Cutlass models that got the rocket around the trunk lock were the 3269 F85 Town Sedan (VIN 3D69...), the 3669 Cutlass Town Sedan (VIN 3G69...), the 3677 Cutlass S Sports Coupe (VIN 3G77...), and the 3687 Cutlass S Hardtop Coupe (VIN 3G87...). Note that the 3277 Cutlass Hardtop Coupe (VIN 3F87...), which looks exactly like the Cutlass S Hardtop Coupe, did NOT get the rocket.
