W-25 Hood

Was the W-25 hood a factory option for 1970-1971 SX?

No. The SX is a Cutlass Supreme and none of the RPO's for those models show W25 as an option.

What Allan said. Despite the fact that just about every single Cutlass (including Supremes) that you see today has a reproduction W25 hood added, none of them came that way from the factory.

Sadly, my 72 will be in the minority with it's OEM hood. And best of all it's rust free and looks like new.

Thank you. I appreciate the input. I am looking at a 71 SX that has been stored since the mid eighties. It has the normal Cutlass hood. I am trying to brush up on them.

The 70/71 SX cars were RPO Y79. Here's a page from the 71 Oldsmobile SPECS that provides some info on it. BTW, since it's a Cutlass Supreme Bucket seats (RPO A51) were standard equipment. Either that or a split bench seat with center armrest (RPO A65) at no additional cost. Things like PS/PB/ Console/ sport mirrors/AC etc were options back then.As you can see the TH400 (M40) was a required option. The 455 4 bbl with dual trumpet exhausts is one of the trademarks of the the car. Basically it's a 442 in disguise to circumvent insurance premiums for muscle cars of the era.
Considering the relatively low cost of the Y79 option that's really a nice way to get into a gentlemans 442.The special fender emblems refers to the SX badging

W-25 Supreme

1970-1971 no W-25.

1972....well....I thought not until recently but I have a copy of docs for 1 car that has factory OAI.

I am having trouble uploading the docs. I will keep trying...

It looks different Dave, but the process is still the same. Try again?

Dave, no argument that the W25 hood was available for the 72 Cutlass Supreme. It's right in the 72 SPECS RPO's. The thread however is directed to the 70-71 SX hood.

Actually it almost makes me cry. See the cost of the U code engine and neat accessories? That would be chump change in today's market but back then that engine would comparatively be $827.37 2018 dollars. The car would come in at $27,351.58 delivered. Tax and license excluded. That's about the cost of a relatively well equipped mid size car nowadays.

If you're curious what the 2018 value on just the hood today would be? hahahah, call Thornton's but be sitting down when they tell you the price. It used to be originally offered for around $1100.00 but now has ballooned to $3,000.00. That doesn't seem to stop folks from ordering them though. Then there's the expense of shipping, fitting and painting. easily over $5,000 just for the hood, not including the breather assembly. That's pretty rich but if ya got deep pockets and no missus or house or your job pays more than you can spend?.....

Note: on the engine upgrade, you'd likely be getting a credit back for the base L34 engine which offsets some of that cost.

Sometimes I wanna cry when I see the prices people ask for certain things. The other day I saw a 1970 Cutlass S post car that the guy claimed was possibly 1 of 14 ever made. He was originally asking $28,200 for it and came down to asking $22,500. The car was nice but far from its original configuration. So I asked him what made that particular car so rare and he told me it was an "Original bench seat" car. That was it. Nothing else. End of story. LMAO. I remember back in the day you couldn't give this stuff away. If you paid $500 for one, it was a real nice one that didn't need anything.

Yes Allan I understand. No 1970 or 1971 Supreme left the factory with a W-25 hood, SX optioned or not.

I am aware that it was an option in 1972. However the docs and picture I shared show that some cars were actually optioned that way. Many Supremes have acquired OAI hoods post production because their owners like them that way. This is the 1st OAI equipped 1972 Supreme that I have encountered that can prove that it came with factory OAI. Show me another..... I'll wait.

Well, ok. I bet you didn't think I could come up with anything did you? How's this?
The car's name is "Louise" and was factory ordered by Scot Hardman's father. Scot goes by GaOldsman on this site.

Does the SPEC booklet show the W-25 option is not available on a convertible, or am I reading wrong?

You're reading it right. Not available with convertible unless it's a W30.

Wonder what the reason was to allow all hardtop models, including the Supreme, to be ordered with the W-25 option, but prohibit the W-25 option on convertibles? Guessing the only reason allowed on W-30 & Hurst/Olds convertibles was because it was part of both packages.

Was it not available on the Cutlass Supreme convertible so long as W-29 was ordered regardless of W-30 option?

I've always thought those option prices to be in addition to, and therefore included the exchange of the standard/base part.
