When I bought my Cutlass the guy selling it was trying to unload it quick and to make it presentable one of the things he Half-assed was that he bolted what he claimed were "Sport" side view mirrors on. I've been looking at parts online and some of the "Rally" and "Bullet" mirrors that the auctions are claiming are factory original don't look quite like my mirrors.

Not sure who to believe, so what do you guys think? What kind of mirrors are these?

It's hard to tell but they look like the right ones. I believe GM used the same mirrors on other cars other than the cutlass and 442 models. Some have different mounting pedalstales giving the mirror a different angle but yours seem to be sitting fairly straight?

 

Yours looks much like the one on my 72's RH door...
What year is your car?

Your base 'gasket' is split and it is mounted a bit too far forward, but that is all i can really see wrong.
I wonder if a chrome mirror was on there before? I wonder why the same mounting location was not used?

The mirrors on your car lok to be right for a 71-72. The 70's are a different 1 year only style.

 

They are the ones in this auction.

 

Those look correct for 71-72 (other than the paint on the gaskets ).

The F-body and 73-77 cars used the same mirror heads but with taller bases. If you had those, the heads would be angled instead of flat to the ground.

 

The car is actually a 70.

But thats not so bad then, I think I can live with 71-72 mirrors especially considering the $300+ alternatives(...for now). I think that may have been one of the auctions I had seen in fact) I didn't realize the 70 mirrors were unique to that year. Learnt.

I read somewhere (on here maybe?) that a couple years of ford escorts had mirrors very similar to the sport mirrors...That, I don't think I could have lived with

I have NO idea why he didn't use the original holes , they aren't even...err.. "even" on the car. Driver side is way forward compared to passenger side.

Just to name a few of his other last minute "enhancements":

Since Rally Red turns chalk white when left in the sun, he graciously rattle canned all the horizontal surfaces back to a red "-ish" color. (not to mention a majority of things next to horizontal surfaces)

Switched the "so-so" decent bucket seats that he had in it the first time I went to look, with a pair of walmart seat-cover clad buckets complete with razor sharp rusted-through spring assemblies AND enough rat poop to give you Hantavirus just by looking at them.

Also he removed the air cleaner for my car to "better display the engine", and let it drive away in the trunk of the other car he was trying to ditch before leaving town.

Oh the things I have learned since I bought my car...
Still love it though.

I had my own fair share of "stupid mods" that I had to undo from my car, like the infamous "power antenna switcher driving the cigar lighter".
I guess it was from a prior CB setup, but when I had the radio on and pushed in the lighter, the switch box blew up and smoke billowed out of the dash when I was on the highway - no fun...

 

Oh, I'm familiar with that excellent chalky AZ sunburnt paint. It was like that on my 1970 Plymouth Sport Fury--my first car--that I bought in Tucson for the princely sum of $1400.

Well, put it this way, it's much better to have a spray-bombed AZ car than a thick lacquer covering bondo job on there. And it's easier to sand off!!

LOL, I'm not familiar with it. And I plan to stay that way.
