No definitive reply here to the best year ever. To me it's subjective to the car itself. I spot A-bodies up here to die for then '68+, cars that look like mega-fun not to mention sweet early cars. Wishy-washy? Probably, but so many toys, so little time!
Guess we all like Olds for some reason? Mine is a simple story. You can roll in a classic "coke bottle", hip car that when you squint your eyes, in low light, she looks like a Chevelle, GTO or perhaps a 442 but I know on-lookers are into the moment often getting a honk or wave. I'm in this car 7K so I'm loving the cheap investment compared to a '67 Chevelle. Those cars are worth that kind of money why?
It would be true that I favor old-school, A-bodies in retro-rod style. How we rolled back in the 70's. Raked **** up with "mags", lap belts, AM only. These non air-bagged (or headrest) cars are clear death traps to some or to me, a blast from the past. I enjoy a loud, franken-car barely idling, setting off car alarms rumbling by for my own sinister reasons including scaring women and children.

Has to be my '84 Cutlass Salon with buckets, console and guage package. Why? Because I was only 22 years old and life was good.

My mother bought me my first cutlass, so I would have a reliable car to use commuting to college 30 miles away. She was paying for it, so I had very little choice in the matter. She said,” Go to Washington Street Motors and talked to Argeo R. Cellucci Sr. and not Junior” (Argeo Sr. is the father of Massachusetts Governor Argeo “Paul” R. Cellucci Jr.).
Argeo Sr. had just received pair of trade-ins with only 25k miles on each, one was a 1970 Cutlass Supreme with a 2 bbl 350, automatic, Galleon Gold, vinyl top and cloth seats for $1700 (year 1976). When I told my mother about the Cutlass, she said OK, let’sgo it. I was reluctant at first. But after a week of ownership, I realized it was the right decision and fell in love with the car.
The car was in pristine condition with 125k miles in 1980,when it was rammed while parked on a city street in Worcester. Allegedly it was hit by another Cutlass and the other driver was ok. Both cars were totaled. I did save the fake wood trim from the glove box. I liked the hidden images in the burled wood design (you know, the images of the Artist Girl friend and the Skulls hidden in the design of the wood pattern).
That was my Cutlass #1. I think I am now on my 7th,(all 1970 – 1972, including 1 convertible). I had a 16 year Cutlass gap to make a few kids, but now, “I am back”. Someday I’ll find a good picture of that car.
In the picture below, you may be able to see the hidden images. I was always wondering of other 1970 CS had similar images.
On the right side, is the image of a woman. On the left side are skulls drowning in themud.
65 for me. Not too big, not too small. Nice styling, Nice ride, lots of factory options. Very few around. Not a cookie cutter car. Had dozens of cars over the years. Started with a 65 Cutlass and I will die with one.
lol great question, difficult answer. B/t my father and I we have owned a 66,67, 68, 69, 77, 85 and 92. I would have to say the 66 and 68 are my favorites. But I really did like the 77. When I bought it it had an odd fire buick v6 in it. After being beat by a Yugo I bought a 74 cutlass salon for a $175 that was all rusted out but had 50k original miles on it. I took the 350 4bbl engine and trans and put them in the 77. What was nice is the rear sway bar and trans cross member bolted right in so I had true dual exhaust and it handled pretty well to boot. The 77 was a sharp looking car style wise, the bumpers were brutal though.

I hate those tricky hidden skulls thought to be slipped in by factory weasel sneaks! Wait, I only spotted those in the 70's, in the car, after a round of... Hmmmm?
64 and the 69 (really dig the tail).....the 64's lines are what I respond to the most....
I love the 64 rear lights and panel I like the front bumper as well I really want to do a freankenstine with 64 front bumper and 65 hood and fenders and grill just not sure if the grill will work with bumper with 64 side trim
Mine has to be an 87 442, I bought one new Christmas 86, my own present to myself after being divorced, drove it for 250k miles, was rusted bad, so I parted it out, and finally this past September I bought another 87 442, needs a little rust repair, and cleaning up, but I really like this car. My original was Black, this one is Gray. Oldsmobile's in our family started in 1964 Grandmother drove a 64 F-85 4 door 330 4bbl, Was so funny she always took it personally if someone would try and pass her, 4bbl would kick in, and they usually didn't get by her.
Casting aside the obvious "1970 W-30 convertible" answers, I would have to go with the one that got away when I was fresh out of high school in 1987, the Rallye 350:
#1: 1970 Olds Rallye 350. I think they have the best looking tail lights and rear bumper of any muscle car...EVER! Add to that one of the best open air hoods of any muscle car, a great rear spoiler, great color, great striping package. Just an awesome car. (pic borrowed from this site...awesome car!)
#2: 1973 Hurst/Olds: I grew up on the '73-'77 Cutlass body style and the '73 H/O is the best that body style has to offer. I'll take mine in black, please.

1972 Cutlass S post car with a W25 hood. That red 68 on the last page has some sexy chrome, and I love the rear side indicator lamps, but the 68 hood isn't as nice, and the 68 'hips' aren't as nice as the '70-72 ones, IIRC.
If I'm doing another Cutlass at some point, it'll be that 1972. Medium blue like the first one in the picture below. Drivetrain undetermined, as of yet. Trim would be the sort that the second one has, except with a painted 'vinyl' roof.
I love the 67's. My first muscle car was a Tahoe Turquoise black vinyl top 4speed 442. I bought it from a female school teacher who kept it in imaculate condition. It was only 6 years old at the time. For a BIG car it was fast!!! The only race i lost in it was against a Hurst equipt Rambler Scrambler, small car 390 4 spd. He beat me by a fenders length. That was also the longest race i ever had. We went through as i recall about 3 different intersections one night, caught the green lights just right. Man we were haulin a$$!!!! Stupid I know but fun. Im restoring one now will be same color, automatic.
Id have to say though that my all time favorite that really makes my heart pump is the 69 Hurst Olds. I got to go visit one about 6 months ago that i have heard about for years. Dirty as hell 2 owner car gets driven once a year down a dirt road. There were live mice living in the air cleaner lol.

67's? some dislike the headlight setup but it carried over to 68's where most are quiet even accepting the split lamps? What's up with that? I like the look and never really thought about it shopping for 66-67's. Wonder if there are 68 light haters?
White_knuckles, although I have said previously my favorite is an 87 442, the split headlights is what I think is what makes the 68 Cutlass/442 look so great. My 1st choice was always a 68 442 conv. Could never afford one, then I bought a new 87 442, and loved the car. It would be hard to choose between them for me, I know the 87 has no HP compared to the 68, and value is not even close, but I really like both.
Anything built before '66 and after '67. My least favorite is the '67. They got that body style right for '66 and ruined it for the year thereafter. Spacing those headlights apart wasn't a good idea
Never having owned an Olds before, I was always partial to the looks of the '77 Cutlass. But a good friend had a Silver, black interior, black Vinyl top, '73, and I loved the looks of that car. I always tried to buy it from him, but he wouldn't budge. Then never ever thinking about buying an Olds after that, when I met my wife, her first car was a new '64, 442. After she made it through all of her cancer treatments, at her 2 year remission anniversary, I bought her a '64 Cutlass. It's not a 442. but it's a sweet convertible.
New to the forum...not new to Oldsmobiles...my Dad rode the train to the plant from Denver to pick up our new 1941 Oldsmobile...we had that for many years...I've owned a number of Old's during my 60 years of driving..along with many other cars...we recently sold our highly modified 57 Chevy pickup as it was simply too much for folks in their 70's to maintain and baby...we have had a '73 Cutlass Supreme and a '75 Cutlass Supreme when they were just a late model driver car...really liked both of them...a couple of weeks ago the "car bug" bit again and I bought a '73 Cutlass that has all the promise of being a great "go get ice cream" and go to the cruise night car...no restoration, no modifying anything, no car clubs...just a weekender for nice weather.
The '73-'75 seems to be the "unwanted child" of the Cutlass family but not for me..I really like the styling....it just doesn't look like anything else...is comfortable...and we're glad to bring home "the stray"...first time I ever bought a car on E bay sight unseen and had it shipped in but what the heck...makes life interesting...Thanks for the forum!!
What a cool acquisition. These cars are not expensive and are a really nice to drive. Just drive. Good for you. When I was a teenager my buddy had a 73 that looked a lot like yours. I really liked it. Welcome to the forum.
^^ Third gear screech.... oh yeah!! She pulls dandy fine and love the white shifter ****. Great vid with the outside shots. My car is a neighborhood menace too. Ha, stupid neighbors simply don't appreciate the melody Flowmaster 40's sing to 'em.
I like them all, but the 76-77 body style and comfort really got me hooked. Outside of the performance factor I wouldn't give up my 76 for anything.
I'm also a big fan of the Pontiac, grand prix's, G8's, I have owned a few of them and still do.
I love the pics posted of so many great looking Oldsmobiles, keep them coming guys.

Well, since there are other '68 votes out there, then I'll add mine. My first Olds was a '68 Cutlass, 4 speed, 3.91 posi, and almost a Ram-Rod. It won me over from the beginning even though it was used and not collectable at the time. Now, many years later, I own a real Ram-Rod. Best car ever.
But then, there's a '69 Supreme out there that I would like also...
Ok, I was about to post the same exact car, right down to the gear ratio. Red, white interior and top, bucket seats, no console. I loved that car!
Mine has always been a Lucerne Mist/Blue 66 Cutlass convertible as that's what my grandfather bought new when I was 2 years old. I've always had some version of this car since then.
As of last week, however, one of my new favorites is my 66 442 White/Red 4 speed Tri Carb convertible...
65 for me, but would be proud to own anyone of the 64-67 years. A friend just picked up a 69 442, and the more I see it the more I appreciate the lines on that year as well! Tough choice with so many great looking cars to choose from.
