VIN on a 69 Cutlass

I have been reading about VINs and the current owner of the one we are looking at sent me a copy of the title and the VIN it shows has a letter in it. I didn't think they used letters back then? Can someone help? Is there someplace to do a seach like you can on newer cars using the VIN to see it's history? I can PM the VIN if someone can look it up. Thanks

Yes, letters in VINs were used then. No, you cannot look this VIN up to get history. Keep in mind that PCs and the internet did not exist in the 1960s, so there is no database for Carfax and the like to access. Post the VIN here and we can decode it for you. At a minimum, the seventh character of the VIN will be a letter designating the assembly plant (unless it was a Canadian-built car, in which case the number 1 was used to designate the plant).

3 = Oldsmobile Division
36 = Cutlass
67 = Convertible
9 = 1969 model year
M = Lansing assembly plant
301430 = sequential build number

Unfortunately, that's all the info contained in the VIN.

vin decoding

I wish I would have been on this site before I spent hours decoding my vin number. I went from web site, to web site, search engine, to search engine and finally found a year one catologe that had all the vin info.

I wish this had a spell checker so I wouldnt look like I cant spell (which I cant spell)
