Testing a fuel gauge and sender on a 1970 Cutlass S

My fuel gauge is stuck over full. Just want to know where to start.

I would start by grounding the wire to the sending unit with the key on to see if it goes to E. If it does then the problem is with the sending unit.

There should be a connector to this brown wire in the trunk, about the center L-R, near the grommet that passes it thru the floor.

Mine was the same way when i got it. I was told it was most liklely the sending unit. Changed the sending unit, all fixed. Fairly easy to do and the part was'nt that expensive.

Both my 71 convertible and my previous 70 Supreme had this issue. I found it was caused by the wire was loose where it attaches to the sending unit stud. I dropped the tank on the 70 and crimped the push-on connector to tighten it and that cured the problem. On the 71 I just reach behind the bumper, grab the wire, and wiggle it until the gauge starts working. I'm too old and lazy these days to drop the tank for this.

Open circuit, either in the wire from the dash to the sending unit, from the sending unit to ground, or a bad sending unit. As noted, the gauge itself can be ruled out as the problem if grounding the wire from the gauge at the sending unit causes the needle to go to E. This would also confirm that the wire between the gauge and the sending unit is intact.

Try to do so many things on this car, I will ground the wire first, if that works I will try Fun 71's easy fix measure while it is on stands.
