T50 getrag 5 speed in '77 Cutlass?????
T50 getrag 5 speed in '77 Cutlass?????
What do you guys think of this? I am not familiar with this although I will be checking my documentation when I get home. As to the value, any opinions?
It is for real...pretty rare but not real desireable IMO because of the 260 and a pretty junky/non heavy duty trans. They were pretty weak and the 260 slug engine is the most HP they could possibly handle. I base my opinion on a few V-6 cars equipped with what I believe was the same trans and they didn't hold up well.
I look at it this way. It has a manual trans in it already so the clutch pedal and all is there. IF you wanted to make a 4 speed/350-455 74-77 Cutlass to build (fabricate), this car would make that conversion a bit easier than say my 76 Cutlass with auto and column shift. If I was still rich (before child), thats what I would do and I think it would be a nice ride. Think about it, a mildly built 350 with about 300 ponies with a 4 speed and some 3.73 gears, true duals would be a fun scooter.

Five speed in a 77 Cutlass is rare. Five speed in a 77 Cutlass Supreme is REALLY rare. When you get tired of the POS 260 and T50, drop in a 350 and World-Class T5 or TKO-500 and have a blast. Keep the original parts just in case.
That is something else. I didn't even know they were using 5 speed transmissions in the 70s. If I were to buy it I would definitely put a 350 into it with a beefed up 5 speed.
The interesting thing is the guy calls it a T50 5 speed getrag transmission. "Das Getrag" in German means transmission. Why would this transmission be associated with German cars or manuafacturers?

Thanks guys, I wouldn't be that interested really, just was curious. I think a person could do better for a grocery getter by driving a little newer Cutlass, say an early eighties with a little engine. Buy that car to make some money on it only, or restore it, show it off, keep it a few years, then make some money on it. A better engine/transmission combo transplanted into a plain vanilla Cutlass S would be better if you wanted a tire burner, I agree.
The guy is wrong. While Gretag does manufacture transmissions, the T50 was built by Borg Warner.
