sputtering 350

So, I got my 72 convert on the road...everything is running fine then, all of a sudden, it starts to sputter and skip. As I was pulling it over, it gave one last gasp...it backfired, blowing a hole in the muffler and sending the dog leaping into my arms.

I am assuming it is carburetor or timing chain or distributor. where should I look first, and what should I look for.

Btw, I heard no telltale, violent sounds before it started to sputter.

Thanks!

It sounds from your description like the backfire was through the exhaust. I would start with the timing, then distributor, then carb. But hey, that's just me.........
