Shock mount-72

Have the shock but the top mount is broken. The spring is attached, but the shock mount has disappeared.
Where can I find a replacement?

Thanks,
Ted

You list seven vehicles in you sig line. Any chance you could give us a hint as to which one you're talking about? Front or rear shock?

Ted, I think that if you have a missing mounting tab on the shock:
a) it's the wrong shock
b) it's the wrong shock
c) it's the wrong shock

I'm kind of wondering what you mean by the spring is attached...the rear shocks don't have springs, they bolt up next to the spring pocket though. Are you saying that there's no hole next to the spring pocket to bolt it to? Post a pic to help us get less confused??

Rear shock mount is two holes in the upper frame section.

Unless you mean the tab that's welded onto the axle tube right next to the brake hub?

See, Ted's got us all guessing.... I think it's the top of the shock that's the issue Tony. Only I don't know 'zactly what he means either. I think he's speaking Ontarionian.

The mount is part of the frame, so if they are "gone", either look again or get a new frame. This is not exactly a normal replacement part that you can buy.

Ted??? ohhhh Teeeddddd??
Doesn't this 72 have shocks in it right now? Shouldn't be all that hard to find the holes - just take out the old bolts??? Are we talking about serious corrosion here?

Take a good look at your 70 that you just painted. The shock mount is exactly the same in it as that 72.

You beat me to it with a picture Tony! But I'll toss these on here anyways as they're a view from the top, on a frame removed from a car. Back to Joe's comment, if this area is rotted away what's the condition of the rest of the frame?

Nice pics John. That frame looks uber good! I was thinking the same thing about the rot....that's pretty heavy steel. But Ted also lives in a known rust belt.

Tony - you interested in that frame??? You know you MAW pull the body and just do the frame the way you want it. Then you could do the brake lines, the engine, tranny, body mounts....I LOVE THIS GAME!!!! MAYBE even replace the frame with a perfect Medford special? If you do the road trip to get it, I'm calling shotgun.

Allan, while your here you might-as-well pick up another car for yourself. Then WE can help give you advice on what to spend on it
I'm sure I've got something in the driveway you'd enjoy having as a companion to your 1972.

John, did I mention? I LOVE THE HUMOR on this site!!!! Hey, I'm open to any advice you guys give me on my 72 project - you know that. I think it would be way more fun to offer help in person than over the keyboard. Maybe I'll pick up that 442 4 speed vert you have in your sig line. Just throw on a hood, fender and egg crate seat, tie down chord for seatbelts and I'm good for cruzin....

Having trouble downloading pics...

Put the car on hoist and frame is good except for this one spot-has had one very small patch.
Car has new floor and trunk pan
Runs
Moves
Yes, as Allan said, I am in that darn rust-belt
John and Tony- yup, that is exactly what has rotted away. The spring is still on that "half" but the shock "mount" is non-existent ,as Tony's pic shows...

Ted, that's a major problem. You need a new frame. Fortunately John has that really nice looking one... Sorry, I just couldn't help myself. Shotgun *again*

Let's see... Ontario is East of Alberta, so Ted will pick up Allan on the way

Ted, if your SURE the rest of the frame is good do you want to cut out the rust and weld in a new piece? I've got a 1971 4 door frame that is really nice... but being a more door there is little demand for it. I could cut a chunk out for you to weld in, however large or small you want. Sounds like a lot of work but it sounds like you've already invested a lot into this car so let me know if you want to explore this option.

Hey guys pick up a welder on the way and some scrap metal. You can engineer something and weld it in place.

Btw, if that rotted off there, I would not wash my car anymore under there. I'd be afraid the rest of it will wash down the drain.

John,
That is a nice offer!
I would pick up Allan, as long as he supplies coffee
I will put the car up tomorrow and get a 2nd opinion. If the verdict is that the rest of frame is good, I will let you know what we decide.

Thanks,
Ted

Mount Update

John sent me a frame mount- thanks John

Turns out the shock mount was twisted out not rotted out.

Will install and post pics.

Allan, post man said the whole frame would not fit in the mailbox, but thanks for brokering the deal.

she is in

The shock mount from John went in great! The trunk is in, frame fixed at back ,old doors removed, and good ones off a 70 put on(little prob with the top chrome-thick vs thin),and a better front right fender is on, after we had fixed the front body mounts,

Thanks again for your help...
Ted

Off to start a build post

You should give up farming and start a classic Oldsmobile dealership in your area.

Hey john do you still have access to that top rear shock mount part of the frame. My left side on my 70 cutlass convertible rusted off. I welded it back on but it didn't last long. The frame is okay accept for that one section, think it was a pocket for salt rock over the years.

Thanks, hawaiiguy

Good morning hawaiiguy, I sent that one to Ted but I've got a couple other frames that I'd be willing to cut parts from. If you'd send me a PM we can talk about how large a piece you need and how to ship it over there.
