Did you do the patch panel welding? Looks good from here. Your pictures are also more justification as to why I hate vinyl tops.

 

Those welds would be a good addition to the lower door skins thread no? It does look like a nice job.

Whats wrong with vinyl tops?? I acutally planned on putting a new black vinyl top on.
I plan on doing black with a black vinyl top.

Vinyl tops tent to accumulate and hold moisture, causing rust. They are pretty to look at and I was thinking about putting one on my car, until I started asking around for prices, pro's and con's. needless to say I will not be installing one on the car

 

BTW that is a nice looking car. What are your plans for it?

 

Well im a 19 yr old college student so I dont just have loads of cash to spend on it.

Nothing major...some Cragar wheels

as for vinyl top.....I wouldn`t I just had to cut up a very clean 67 due to a vinyl top the car was nice other than the roof was completely shot

 

Congrats on thinking far enough ahead to go to school. I wish I had. you look to be doing a very nice job on the car Keep it up. I'm sure it will be sweet taking that first ride after she is done.

 

I was referring to what appears in the photos to be heavy pitting and possibly holes at the base of the C-pillar where the top used to be. In any case, nice job so far.

 

I would not be afraid to put a vinyl top on at this point. There are two reasons why...

If you pull the vinyl tops off of old cars, you can see that the prep work usually left something to be desired. As you are restoring your car, YOU should know enough to do the correct prep work, ensuring a longer lasting installation.

The other reason is because restored cars of this vintage typically do not experience the exposure to the elements that beseiged them for the first 30 years of their lives. Hence, much less neglect can be expected for your NEW vinyl top than the original one experienced.

Bottom line, if you like the look or want to keep the originality, don't let fears of rust deter you, just make sure you take care of it like you should.

 

Everyone has an opinion about vinyl tops. It really comes down to what you want on your ride, so it's personal. Your car came with vinyl and yes it's a pain to take off etc, but in the end run if you want a black vinyl over black, I personally think that would look exceptionally cool.

My car is silver and I have all the stainless ready for putting a black vinyl top on it. My buddy at work keeps telling me not to cause he doesn't like how it would look + he says the same as everyone else - it would be prone to rust. I don't care, and besides its my car not his so its getting done my way. I know the risks. Also I'm putting the right kind of original vinyl on to make it match what came from the factory. My ride stays in the garage under wraps unless it's a beauty of a day.

Yeah, keep the vinyl. Mine was pretty scarry too when the old one came off. If your like me it isn't gonna see much weather anyway. Nice car man!
