New Wheels

I finally got my new wheels and tires. I found these on Craigslist very about 2 miles from my house. I have also included a photo of the old rims that were on the car when I bought it. The ride is soooooo much better. It even feels like is it shifting differently. I can really tell a difference on acceleration as well. The center photo of the "ghetto rims" are the old ones

So are the SS wheels the new ones or the donks are the new ones?

Very nice! Looks 100x better and you probably added several thousand miles to the life of your drivetrain, suspension and braking components.

Funny thing about how a taller sidewall adds compliance and softens the ride.

It even feels like is it shifting differently. I can really tell a difference on acceleration as well.
What is the outside diameter of the new tire vs. the old ones. A smaller diameter tire will raise the engine RPM at a given road speed, effectively changing the shift points and improving the acceleration (at the expense of mileage, unfortunately).

Nice! Big improvement every way possible!

I do suggest you paint your brake drums to really set them off.

X2

In 72 the drums were painted black when the rally wheels were factory installed. That would look nice on yours, too!

You can also sell the old wheels for a decent chunk of change. There are some that really like those donks. There is a shop here in Lawton, OK and all they do is sell big wheels. I see guys out in front of it all the time with a Monte Carlo, Impala, Ford LTD, etc. trying on new 20"+ rims like they are new shoes.

You may have bought them off of a 71 442, but they weren't factory installed on that car. The chrome SSIII wheels were only offered on the 80s G-body Cutlii. They are also available from aftermarket suppliers.

I absolutely hate the "donks" on anything! III's look great on your beautiful red convertible......I have an affinity for red convertibles, i.e. Big Red is one of ours (click on my name, then view public profile to check her out!).

Yes. All SSII/SSIII wheels fit any A or G body from 1964 to 1988.

I'm glad everyone likes. I knew they weren't original to the 71 either. I just had not gone on a fact finding mission to find out what year. The center caps are snap on so that was a big clue. I just had to act fast, because I could not let these get away. So, thanks for the feedback on that. I have a set of SSII that I just had media blasted. I could not get them painted and wrapped for what I paid for those wheels and tires. I was laid off for 5 months and really could not put any money into it. Recently went back to work so, game on!!!
