My First Car. 1974 Cutlass S GMO

My first car was a clone of the brown Oldsmobile Cutlass shown. I was told It was a special edition for Chicago Olds dealers. My cousin bought it used in 1979 with 34000 miles. I got it in 1985 as a gift from my uncle and aunt and drove it for a about a year and half before it died. Like all 70s cars were very badly made the reason few survive today. The picture is the 1974 Chicago motor show.

I take it you have this car? Show us or tell us a little more about it. Sounds pretty neat to me.

:(

I has to get rid of in 1987 it was well worn. By time it was handed down to me in 1985, vinyl top was rotted out and removed and the hatch sun roof was so rusted it blew off one day going down the road. I traded for a used 1981 Isuzu Imark because needed more economical car

Badly made? I'd agree if it was used every day in Chicago salt and rain- and left to bake in the high ozone summer sunshine like every car before and after that 1974 model? Yes engines didn't last much because if they did the price of the car would have been 4 times what a 74 Cutlass was stickerd priced at. Low mileage survivors are out there- and they drive and used hard- parked wet- and begged for more, but I wouldn't say they were badly made.....compared to what Chrysler built in 1974 especially! Not to mention what rolled outta Fo Mo Co. plants in 1974 don't even get me started there. Olds was still a leader in manufacturing- and the assembly lines in Lansing rolled 3 8 hour shifts per day to keep the dealer lots stocked because the entire country bought them up. but yes- Like any car in 1974 if they were plied behind a salt truck- or left outside like a Frat house couch on the front porch- YES they rotted - rusted and deteriorated like anything else including a rice burner. That was PART of the coolness factor was seeing a 1974 Cutlass S with a 4x6 bolted in place of the missing rear bumper ! but Hey- it gave people something to talk about at the donut shop whilst sucking down a morning coffee and a Krispy Cream off of Cicero avenue.
