Looking for more power.

Hey guys, Me again.

I currently have a 1986 Oldsmobile cutlass supreme, with a 307 Olds engine in it. Only thing is, its up over 300,000km's and I'm looking for something with more power.

I wanted to get a Olds 350 rocket engine and get a supercharger for it. But then I found out ( didnt search that hard, I just never knew it ) That Oldsmobile made a 455 Engine.

Now I'm wondering, what kind of modifications it would take to fit that engine into my 86 Cutlass bay.

The Car started out as just a nice restore project with me and my dad, but now its veered into a performance project for me to learn how to install parts on.

If anyone has any ideas for me/any information on the engines that the 86 is and isn't compatible with it would be great.

Thanks guys Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Hello Flemming,
Years ago I bought a 1971 455 that had been in a 1978 Cutlass so I know they will fit in the G-body but it must have been tight! I've got several engines for sale but don't know what part of the country you are in. If you would post your city and state in your profile then someone close by might be able to help you. John

Yeha, Ill update that right now.

I don't think it'll make much a difference tho, I'm probably one of the few Canadians on this site. I live in Halifax Nova Scotia so its pretty far east. But who knows, maybe someone is closer by then I think!

You would probably be closer to guys in New York and that area. I believe there are at least a couple guys from B.C. and Ontario that post here often. Welcome to the site though!

The 455 is externally a tall-deck version of the 307/350 small blocks. It will bolt directly into a G-body using 307 motor mounts and frame mounts (DO NOT get 455 motor mounts from an A-body, they won't work). Clearance to the A/C box is tight due to the taller deck, but it does fit. You'll need exhaust manifolds from a 455 A-body or the appropriate headers. You'll also grenade your 200-4R trans the first time you floor it.

Alright sweet. So other then a tight clearance issue, it should be a drop in with only the 455 Manifold/pipes to swap out.

I planned on getting a standard transmission anyways, although I dont know which model number the 455 will work with. Nor do I know which model numbers the standards are, ( I thought they were like TH-400 or something like that ).

Thanks for the info man, Great help.

Now I just gotta find a place that sells refurbished 455 engines OR someone thats selling one.

Amazing guys!

Huge thanks Jim! Thats just what I was wondering. That page answered pretty much every question I had and explained quite easily what changes are to be made and which ones should stay the same despite the differences in the big block and the current small block. MUCH appreciated!

As for the finished product pictures? They were JUST what I needed hahah! I love the look of his engine and cant wait to begin work on mine. Motivation is just what I needed, I cant thank you guys enough for the extra time you've taken to help me along and get started here.

I've still yet to nail down a 455 engine for sale anywhere yet, but when I do I'll jump on it as soon as I can. I might keep a picture journal of the work I do then post the before and after pictures...

But I'm getting a little ahead of myself.

Thanks again guys. I'll be back with news soon!

Buy heavy duty springs, you'll need them for the extra weight.

Yeha, I plan to revamp the suspension afterwards anyways, Its a bit TOO low right now. I also plan to add some bigger rear tires so everything just kinda builds on itself.

Its turning out to be a pretty exciting project for me, I cant wait to get started!

Darn.

I apparently found a 455 for sale relatively close to Nova Scotia. Its on the site you posted Oldsguy, Only thing is, I cant PM or post on his thread yet, I've still yet to be registered.

Thats the topic he made. Hopefully its not sold/the Pontiac version of the 455.

Ill check back tomorrow, see if I can log in then.

I linked this thread so he knows. Good luck and no it isn't the Pontiac version......that site is REALOLDSPOWER. Plus it has J heads which is an identifier for Olds heads. You DO know you will have to rebuild that engine, right?

Oh yeah. I wouldn't expect anything worth 100 bucks to run in the least bit. I planned on Rebuilding everything from the block up. New gaskets, rings, bolts, fittings; The whole lot.

Only thing is, its gonna cost about 10x the cost of the engine itself to ship something that big to Nova Scotia. Anyone have any experiences with a good shipping company that was relatively cheap?

Yeah I think alot of it has to do with weight tho. I could ship a Skittle to Toronto for like a buck. But if it weighed 70 pounds, it would cost like 100 something.
