Inner rear tail light lens?

Just took apart my taillights for a redo on my 70 Cutlass......what was the purpose of the inner lens? ..Have not.. seen this on a car before

Thanks,

Ted,
I believe it's called a diffuser. It helps to spread the light out more to make it look more even when viewed from behind. Otherwise it might be real bright right where the bulb is & not as bright everywhere else. All '70-'72 cars had them.
