Dunno if it's an electrical one - I guess it is. So, what do I need to replace the one I already got ?

The car is a 1981 Oldsmobile Cutlass LS sedan. Tried searching on Summitracing.com but they only had for the years 1984 and up....

I also mistyped "change" on the post header, sorry.


And I also forgot to add that it has the 231Cid V6.

The reason for me wanting to change the fualpump, is that the old one does not pump fuel fast enough and the engine "coughs" sometimes when I gently press down the gasspedal.

Of course, it may well be other critical components but I just know the pump is the culprit

I would recommend some troubleshooting before deciding to r/r the fuel pump. Check the filter. Also, you car is probably new enough to be sensitive about a faulty fuel filler cap. My daughter in law drives a four year old VW bug and the computer in it new when the cap wasn't screwed on correctly . I know 1981 isn't as new but it might be a cheap fix to change the cap if you feel yours might be bad, cheaper than changing the pump anyway. Just a few ideas, hope it helps.

No seriously, the filter is brand new, and hoses in the engine compartment are overhauled. A friend o' mine said it could be the gastank's fault - that there's a vacuum in it (faulty air). I've driven around without the fuelfillercap, in order for any "captured" vacuum could get out, havn't had too many problems since.....

On a sidenote : I've had my car treated underneath - y'know, for the winterseason - and I think some of the goop they put on there might've sabotaged some airholes in the tank. I'm no expert on fueltanks, but it could be the cause to my little problem.

What letter engine is that in your VIN code? I have Oldsmobile chassis service manuals for 1980 and 1985 Oldsmobiles. I could check em out later and email you the diagrams if they are in there.
They go by letters and liters in the books, not Cubic inches.

Hi. My Pontiac winter beater has the same engine. Change the pump. I was having the same issues, untill the pump finally went. Should be available at a local auto parts store. Best of luck, and let us know how it works out. Jim.
