how to spot a true 1970 SX 455?

can anyone help with some pointers? I have no idea of what the differences are between the reg cars and the SX 455 car. How do I know which 455 is in the car (ie, W-32,L-33, etc)?

Also, where should I be looking for a build sheet?

Here's some info I got on the car....asking price is $7800. From what you see below, do you feel the price is decent? doesn't sound bad to me personally if the car is basically done mechanically. Also, the owner told me that the engine is the 365 horse 455. i'm looking for something that I can drive and work on at the same time, and this looks like it could fit the bill.
" the ext. is Polo. Green 99 caddy color just looks black,
int. is green was in process of changin to black only dash is done rest all org.,
eng. trans. rear end 10 bolt all #'s match eng.-trans. rebuilt have reciepts.
little rust on hood at chrome trim right above headlight, deck lid same place, small hole rear window bottom right on filler panel, trunk no holes-surface rust, floor board pinholes rear, little surface rust bottom fender frame solid never been wrecked or driven in snow. Alabama has no Title only tag registration - Pa will issue a clear title no problem car is clean in my name I bought in 1998
front brakes disc- rear drum. Car runs excellent all suspension parts new, complete brake sys. new. a/c 134r one broke line have org. replacment."

A quick search brought up this thread:

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...ification.html

An original build sheet or window sticker showing Y-79 are the keys, as well the VIN on the 455 block. Also, 365hp W32 has OG trans, 365 L31 has OD trans, as does the 320hp L33 2 bbl. PM me with more info including the VIN and owner name/location if you have it and I can tell you if it's in the SX registry.

**Additional info once I read your details again*** I am familiar with this car and added it to the SX registry when it was on Ebay about four years ago - it's actively for sale by the same owner now. Per the window sticker (great to have), it's a real Y-79 car. It was a factory L-33 2 barrel car originally though and it was Aspen Green (light green) with a white vinyl top. A/C, buckets, Dual Gate... nice options. It's nto far from me at all and I thought about looking at it but I don't need the temptation.

so he is wrong abt the 365 hp motor then......can't be if it's #'s matching and an L-33 car. I assume he has the window sticker then?

It's a 320 hp L-33 car and somebody put a 4 barrel carb/intake on it in the past. Yes, he's wrong about the 365 hp part, although it's putting out more than 320 hp now with the 4 barrel setup.

Not sure where you're located, but if you're in the salt belt, having a minimal rust TX/AL car at $7800 isn't bad at all.

i'm in central PA.....there are 2 other SX's for sale to my east.........in quakertown and souderton, each abt 2 hrs away. One is a 70 and the other a 71.......my preference is for the 70....like the grille look a bit more. I spoke to the owner of the car near you and he is moving back to Alabama tomorrow and is flexible on the price, so i can obviously do a bit better than $7800.

I should have bought that sx ragtop I saw last fall for sale abt 12 miles from me...jsut didn't have the $$ then.

Well, it's a real y79 SX and from the pics it looks to be in pretty good shape. I think $7800 is a good price for the car.

Terry,
The best part of the deal is you have the original window sticker that validates its heritage. If you can do better on the price, even better. Why not offer him 10% over dealer sticker and see what he says . It's a nice looking car

Dual gate shifter is always nice. Interior needs some freshening, but everything you need will be available aftermarket.

Also looks like someone took the time to do a rattlecan visual to the engine. How does it run? Not sure why someone would have changed it to a 4bbl? The HC 455 in 1970 should have come with a 4bbl carb and intake. Looks can sometimes be different from driveability. Hope it works out for you.
