Heat and AC replacement
Heat and AC replacement
Hey all,
I've got a 70 AC car that I'm looking to get the heat and AC working again.
Weve owned the car for 10 years or so. Living in a cooler climate, we only drive it from may to September ish, and never really worried too much about getting it all working again. However, I'd like to get he heatvworking again for the sake of the defrost and figured while I'm at it may as well do it all.
I started looking around under the dash and see now that the duct work is all gone. Looks like most of the internals are gone. The control unit still operates and opens the gate, but that's about it.
At this point, I expect that it won't be a tweak and repair job anymore, but likely a total refab. Wondering if anyone else has tackled this and if there are any suggestions on kits or sourcing parts.
thanks

Get a factory Chassis Service Manual, which details how to remove the HVAC box. Accessing the outboard lower nut requires removing at least the inner fender on the passenger side, if not the whole fender due to rusty fasteners that spin in the plastic inner fender. Once off, replace the heater core whether it needs it or not. I'm not sure how you figured out the internals are gone without pulling the HVAC box, but I'd want to be very sure before launching into this, as it's a PITA.
Even if you put an aftermarket AC system in your Oldsmobile a FSM & CSM are necessary tools for owning a classic car. They're just as essential as a socket set. Go here to look for reprints:
