Hi all, I am new here. Installing a 455 Olds into a 77 cutlass and cannot seem to find frame brackets. Some genius
welded a pontiac into the car. Even a picture would help . Am I wrong in thinking 73 to 77 use same brackets ? Thanks RJ
Also what is Anchor's # for mounts?
The parts book shows that the 1977 cars actually use the same frame pads as the 1977-90 B/C body cars and the 1978-88 A/G body cars. Note that they are RH/LH. And no matter which Olds motor you are using, these frame pads require the 2328 motor mounts.
By golly those are the brackets & pads i have . Nothing seems to sit right.
Thanks for the info Though. The wider end would go down ,righr ?
Pontiac motors didn't use frame brackets in those years, they used the Chevy "clamshell" frame motor mounts and unique brackets that bolted to the Pontiac block. The correct Olds motor frame pads are P/N 559271 RH/559272 LH. Are you sure they are mounted in the correct holes in the frame crossmember?
The Pontiac was a hack job by some VoTeck. They found some old Pont. brackets and welded them to frame . Took a while with a radiac and grinder
to clean the mess up. . I bolted mounts to engine and slid the through bolts the fame brackets and bolted engine to trans . With trans crossmember in
place so I'd have a point of reference. When I lower engine till brackets sit on frame pan hits front cradle and is off center. It sits crooked . I've done
many engine swaps as Im a 50 year machinist / engine builder . this thing is wonked . This thing is a A body ,right? Thanks again Joe
PS the frame would not be the same as a G body so why G body brackets??

Yes, a 1977 Cutlass is an A-body. Rubber motor mounts should be bolted to the rear two of the three tapped holes on the side of the block. Are you sure you have 2328 motor mounts? And this is a stock pan, not a larger aftermarket one, right?
Yes 2328 mounts , back 2 holes , stock pan. I did find a pict of the brackets wide end up but he bolts will not go through that way.
Guess I'll make my own dam brackets.
Question, are these engines supposed to sit in the middle of the front crossmember/ cradle
Wide end up is correct, and the upper bolt hole towards the firewall. I don't know what you mean by "in the middle". Yes, the engine is centered side-to-side. The frame mounts bolt towards the back of the crossmember. Which trans do you have, and which bolt holes do you have the trans crossmember attached to?
Look, I have no idea what the car you're working on looks like, but I find it hard to believe that someone could screw up a frame and crossmember enough that the stock brackets won't bolt a stock engine into the stock location with stock motor mounts - at least not without obvious cutting torch marks. I'd suggest not using the trans crossmember as the reference point, since that may be what's screwing you up. Olds built several million of these cars between 1973-77, and no one ever had to make their own brackets on the assembly line, so clearly something is wrong. Start with the frame pads wide end up and upper bolts to the back. Bolt them to the frame in the correct location. Drop the motor and trans into the frame and see where the trans crossmember ends up. I'm willing to bet it lines up with one set of holes already drilled in the frame. And which trans crossmember do you have, a stock single hump or an aftermarket dual hump? The TH400 crossmember is a different part number from the TH350 crossmember on these cars.
It's a TH350 .I put the trans crossmember where it was but engine looks good front to back. About 1 inch of driveshaft yoke showing..
let me see if I can turn the wide side of brackets upwards I have them down. Oh , The trans crossmember is an older double hump and it seems
to mount the trans a little higher than I like it but it's OK. I've also have 4 tube headers to deal with.
Turns out I had the I had the wide end of bracket down instead of up. . Found a Pict of the way they go on the forum.
They seemed to fit the mounts better that way,,,, wrong though. Thanks again ,RJ
