cowl tag id

this is what i think i have found out about the tag so far can somebody help with the trim and the other #s.

Body by Fisher
07D 026960 310177 5
ST 68-33687 BF06583 Body
TR 944 B80 G2 Paint

07D = July 4th week

ST 68-33687 = 68 olds cutlass v8 holiday coupe

Body BF06583 = Fremont 6,583 built

TR 944 B80 ?

Paint G2 = G willow gold, 2 ?

026960 310177 5 ?

You are mostly correct, I've gone through your list and noted items

07D = July 4th week - Correct

ST 68 = 1968 correct

3 = Oldsmobile division of GM

3687 = olds holiday coupe -Correct. If the code was 3587 it would have been an L6 engine
Body BF = Fremont - Correct

06583 = number built - No, this is the production sequence.

TR 944 B80 ? TR = Trim 944 = Willow gold - the interior trim color. B80 = Chrome Roof drip moldings

PNT G2 = G willow gold Correct, 2 = Black vinyl roof

026960 310177 5 ? I believe these would be fisher options referenced in the actual build sheet

This is actually the Fisher Body production sequence number and is unrelated to the production sequence number of the car (the last six digits of the VIN).

Willow Gold cars are beautiful and rare. My first car was a '68 Cutlass Supreme 4-door, Willow Gold/Willow Gold. It's long gone now, but it also only cost me $150 (in 1976). You hardly ever see the Willow Gold exteriors. Usually someone has painted them red

"TR 944" not only indicates the color of the interior, it also indicates the type of front seats that were installed in the car. 944 = willow gold with strato bucket seats. It appears to me that you could only get bucket seats in the willow gold color for '68.

thats great to hear because when i got the car it had 80s olds seats in then. i got my hand on some 71 buick bench seat off the junk yard, and now im trying to find myself a goog pair of bucket seats.

The good part of your search for bucket seats is that strato buckets were used in Chev, Pontiac, Buick and Olds. So it really opens up the horizon when you're looking. Check with Rcorrigan though about the headrests. I believe the 68/69 may not have had headrests. If that doesn't matter it opens the horizon to a LOT of seats from 68-72. Glad you're having fun with your project. It would be really nice to see your car restored to original colors.

Headrests were optional in 1968 and mandatory in 1969. And there is a difference in the way the seat backs lock between '68 and '69 buckets as well. For '68, the seatbacks lock with a button on the outboard side of the seatback. In '69, the seatback lock is in the middle of the back of the seatback.

So, if you found a set of '68 bucket seats (seatback lock on the outboard side of the seatback) you would be in good shape. Even better would be a set of '68 buckets with optional headrest. Best would be the better option, but with a reclining passenger bucket seat!

Attached are a couple of pictures of my brother's '68 4-4-2. His car has the optional headrests and reclining passenger bucket seat. You can see the seatback release on the picture that shows the reclining passenger bucket set. The lever that lets the seatback recline is on the lower outboard part of the seat.

You could only get Willow Gold buckets in the 442 and Cutlass S, as Randy says benches were not available in those cars, but you could get Willow Gold benches in Cutlass Supreme, Cutlass, and F-85.

in 69 most had headrests, but they where allowed to be deleted by special order and is so rare, the word rare isnt appropriate,in 70 they where mandatory...no choice

my dash pad is painted black is there any way i can remove the paint without damage or will i have to paint it gold again, and what style of seat belt did the car come with, and what color would they have come in?

2 things:
1. It may only be dyed. In which case you can just dye over top of it.
2, If it is painted it depends on the quality of job done already. If it can be picked off or is flaky you're pooched. You would have to get a stripper and take it all off. When you paint plastic properly it needs an adhesion promoter to bond properly to the base.

Don't use a chemical stripper on a dash pad. If it's dyed or painted you can try Simple Green and fine steel wool. Take your time. If it doesn't come off then it will be well prepped (after rinsing) for an adhesion promoter and dye\paint.

are those head rest definitly the right ones i always thought they were like the 66,67 option style for 68,longer and flatter,not like the 69 style

That's a good and interesting question. I'm pretty sure those are the correct headrests for my brother's '68 4-4-2 and I base my answer on a piece of advertising material I have for 1968 Oldsmobiles. It's the advertising that has the red Cutlass S holiday coupe on the front with a woman in a somewhat "psychedelic" dress sitting on the top with her feet on the hood. On page 4 of that advertising, there's a picture that shows "dual front-seat head restraints" and they are the same style as is in my brother's car. They are shown on a "strato bench" seat but the ad says they are also available with "strato bucket" seats as option A81. It goes on to say that an A82 headrest option is available for conventional bench and custom sport seats. I suspect (not 100 percent sure, though) that what you mention (longer, flatter headrests) are the A82 option.
