Thumbs up 79 Cutlass

I have a 79 cutlass supreme. It was my brothers car before i got it and the engine was a 4.3L V8. It ended up getting blown and i was wanting to get sumthen a little faster in it like a 307, 350, or maybe a 400 small block. Im still saveing up but if you got one that you dont need or want to sell i will try and make arrangements to pay the full amount. if you want to email me my email is

Cut79lass@yahoo.com
I will try and post a pick if my 1979 Cutlass Supreme later

If that "4.3 liter" is an Olds 260, then an Olds 350 or 403 is a much easier and cheaper swap than an SBC.

Olds never made a 327. I am sure you mean 307. Who would want to put a SBC in their Olds?

SBC= Small Block Chevy V8. And to give you a tip: This group in here is extremely knowledgable, friendly and helpful, but they (we) tend to be a little Olds-centric. Chevy engines in Oldsmobiles is a pet peeve. It makes our cars "unclean". As a practical matter, it would be a lot easier to find a used Olds V8 to swap into your Cutlass than to make all the modifications for a "SBC". Olds engines aren't lying around in everyone's backyards like Chevy engines, but they are stilly plentiful enough. Good luck. Send pictures and updates of your project.

Had a 78 Cutlass (Calais - special badging and trim) new from the showroom. It came with a chebby 305 4bbl. Guess GM was going through an identity crisis then. It was a great car. Kept it for 3 years then moved up to an X body Omega in 81. Didn't like it so went to a new 82 Cutlass T top (Dove grey and matching interior). It had the 4.3 in it.
Good economical motor for running around town. Gutless on the highway, especially if you had to pass someone. I'd never put one back in the car even if someone paid the whole cost. It was just so disappointing to have a nice car with no performance.

I agree with Joe, put in a 350 or something like it. You won't be disappointed with the results. Both of those motors put out the torque and hp you might be looking for.

I think you should find a solid main web 403 for your Cutlass.

The X-body was originally the Nova and clones (like the Omega, Ventura, and Apollo). In 1980 GM released the revised FWD X-cars - the Chevy Citation, Olds Omega, Pontiac Phoenix, and Buick Skylark. These were GM's first mass production transverse engine FWD cars and they had a host of problems. Not the General's best effort and a big part of the long slide from first place for the company.
