72 Cutlass engine and Electrical slot

Hi everyone. I have a 72 Cutlass Supreme. I bought it off from someone who has restored it. Previous owner put an aftermarket radio at where it used to be the cigarette lighter. Now I don't have a place to plug in my accessories . Is there anyway i can still use my accessories? Or I have to choose between the radio and the lighter?

Also, I have a 350, but I don't know if it's a chevy 350 or a olds 350. How should I find out?

Thanks a lot

Are you saying they removed the cigarette lighter receptacle?

Kinda...so here's the thing: I bought the car from another guy, and he removed the cigarette lighter to put an aftermarket radio in there. Now I don't have a place to plug in my accessories such as my dash cam or phone charger. Is there anyway i get to keep the aftermarket radio and having a 12v slot at the same time?

You can buy aftermarket aux. power sockets that can be mounted anywhere.

I'm trying to get my brain around how the lighter was removed when it's inside the ashtray door, and not where the radio is.

Apparently something has been installed in there. Maybe he can post a picture.

Here's a picture of what I was talking about. Where the JVC radio is used to be a cigarette lighter and an ash tray. But the previous owner removed it and put this in.

Picture would certainly clear it up...but I've been eyeballing that area for a stereo installation as well. Lets you keep the stock radio in the dash but run an upgraded sound system.

Might be what the PO did there.

edit: Of course! Photo posted while I was typing :-D

Just as I thought, your only choice is to mount some aftermarket aux. power sockets. The ones I posted above were from Walmart. You can probably find them at your auto parts store also.

Do I just find the 12V power wire and connect them with a fuse or what?

I would run a new heavy wire from the horn relay stud with a fuse. Chances are they used the lighter wire to power the aftermarket radio.

Look at your fuse box.

You will find one connection at 12v. all the time. The top wire. batt
AND..one connection at 12v with key on, the bottom wire.ign

In the picture are two wires that have been added, this is a possible connection point that could be spliced into. IF they are full, you could go to the battery with fuse protection as already noted.

If the terminals are free, you are good to go.

You could always do a Google image search for "Olds 350"and "Chevy 350" and see what they look like.

Thanks guys who's helping me identifying the engine. Found the block number and it's an olds 350. However, I still need you guys help. My wipers aren't working now and one of my taillight is out. Could this just be an electric wiring issue? My taillight bulbs are all good thou. The taillight comes on when i turn the headlight on, but blinker and brake lights don't work.

Are you sure that the taillight bulb is good? Sure sounds like a bad filament.

Have you checked your fuses?

bulb is all good because there are only two bulbs and the two bulbs are literally everything in the taillight. It turns on when i have headlight on but no go for brakes and blinker

Right, so the taillight filament is good, but the signal/brake light filament is toast.

You can usually see the filament just hanging if you look closely, but it's easy to test with one wire to the base and the other to each bottom button.

As I stated in the PM, swap the bulbs from left to right and see if the problem moves.

Bulb is all good. I think i'm changing a whole set of taillights because those bulbs are also stuck on there very well. I couldn't get it off. Also my wipers don't work, do you know how to check if it's electrical wiring or a problem with the motor? I live in Houston and it's going to be raining a lot soon, I'd like to get it fixed.

I installed an 8 track player in my SX in the ashtray compartment, but did not have to remove the lighter. It was the perfect "hideaway" stereo back in the day.
