The grills and stone shield emblems suggest 72. Looks like it may be a decent car. I'm surprised it's in a police auction.

I saw it posted on facebook from Cleveland police. The type of jokers that go down there will drive the price up beyond what it's worth in a heartbeat. They even do it on the crappy cars. I've gone a few times and it's never been worth it in my opinion.

I'd almost bet this is a stolen car (duh) that hasn't been thoroughly researched for the proper owner. What's the scoop with that? IF the owner finds it afterwards and it can be proved it was his/stolen, does he get it back and the auction purchaser get left on the flat rock? That's what happens up here. Happened to a neighbor about 15 years ago. One day the cops showed up and just impounded the car; told him it was a stolen car he'd bought out of a dealership and he was $hit out of luck.

I can see that when the car is purchased from a dealer, but from a police auction? Seems as if they would have to clear the title before selling it auction.

I don't know Ken. I was just asking. What if the owner actually sees it somewhere and compares VIN and makes a claim?? Just a question. I don't know how the police auctions there work. Possibly some of the vehicles are repossessed on outstanding loans by a sheriff? I'm not suggesting the police haven't done due diligence, just questioning what happens IF....

I would love to have had some extra $ and go to this auction. From what I know most of the cars are impounded, seized or confiscated during crimes or when they confiscate property and possessions that have been designated as come from funds of crimes. (not sure how to describe what I mean). Guy I work with said some of the vehicles will have a salvage title and not always have keys to them. They have an auction twice a year, the last auction I know I saw on the news they had a pretty new Bentley that had been confiscated in a drug bust. Think it was about a $150000 car and sold for $63000. Once they have the auction results listed, I'll post them, I may not want to know what it sold for.

I always thought that if your car gets stolen and the insurance company pays you for it, then if/when it gets recovered it belongs to the insurance company. I don't think you'd get it back if they paid your claim. Anybody know for sure?

In this case, the recovered car would belong to the insurance company, but they're not in the business of collecting cars. At their option they can allow you to buy it back, the price depending on its recovered condition (as-stolen, missing drivetrain, upside down, recovered from a river, etc.)

They call it "criminal tools" when a vehicle or house is used for illegal drug activity. They then have the right to confiscate anything used in the crime. car's homes boats cash phones. If you used it to do the deed they can take it.

I also want to know what it went for how do you find the results?

I've been searching for auction results, but have not found them yet, but it's only Monday morning, maybe after the city workers get to work they will post results, just kidding. But I've not found out any auction results yet. When I do, I'll update.

Just found out today, the 72 Cutlass S sold for $7500 has no keys, and a salvage title.

Thanks, Mark. Looks like somebody got a pretty solid car for a reasonable price!

Years ago a friend of mine had a 69' Camaro with a bad carb. The car was stolen out of his driveway. He had liability on it, didn't qualify for classic insurance then, so he never collected. About a year later the NYPD stopped someone blowing a red light in East New York, Brooklyn. Back then the neighborhood was a war zone. Anything goes type of motto. The PD contacted him and he got his car back with a new carb and other upgrades. He felt the car was jinxed so he sold it, for more than what he paid for it. Anyone else have that kind of luck?
