70 - 72 Cutlass S Production Numbers
After searching around the net a bit it seems very easy to find 442 production numbers as well as w31, Hurst Olds, etc...
I've always wondered what the production numbers where for just the plain old Cutlass S model is from the years 1970 - 1972.
If anybody out there knows this I would really appreciate finding out what the numbers are.

11,571
The numbers were actually pretty similar for those years.
For '70, '71, and '72, the convertible was available only in the Cutlass Supreme line, and the production numbers were 11,354, 10,255, and 11,571, respectively.
Of course, for '70 and '71, the 442s were a separate line, and there were 442 convertibles also (2,933 in 1970 and 1,304 in 1971). For '72, when the 442 went back to being an option package on the Cutlass, the convertible production number would include those that were 442s, but my source doesn't break those numbers out separately.

That makes sense because that had to be a pretty sluggish car with the a/c on and a few people in the car.

I actually came across one of these low-end Cutlasses once. A '69 that had been sitting in a garage for 10 years and had less than 10,000 miles on it (this was in about 1995). It had the "Econo-Way 6" engine. Very nice car, condition-wise, but it had no options. Not even a radio. Hubcaps, not full wheel covers, with the wheels painted the same color as the car. Certainly no air-conditioning.

Production Numbers
Any idea(s) as to where my car would fit into these production numbers? I have a 1970 Cutlass Supreme (numbers matching) (L33 option'd, 320hp., 455 2 br. (E Heads/F Block/W-Z Manifold/Factory Dual Exhaust)) w/ matching TH400 and factory AC. I have replaced the 2br manifold with an Olds Performer Intake and Holley double pumper. But with the L33 option being cancelled Feb 1970, makes me think it might be rare(r) to find? I have also found a build sheet (between gas tank and mat) after taking off a dealer installed tow hitch, which lists all the items I've described.

70 Supreme w/L33
If it is a 70 Supreme w/L33 without the SX Y79 package it is pretty rare - at least one with a #'s matching drivetrain and documentation like the build sheet. I would save any OEM things you take off it.

The Build Sheet
I believe this style of car was discussed in an SX article here in the forums and someone said they hadn't ever seen one, here's their chance...
An Early 70s car with L33 option that never got the y79 package.
Any "knowledgable" information is greatly appreciated....
Thanks in advance...

Here's a copy of my build sheet. Visuals of the car turn up: Supreme-style grille, no boxed lower ctrl-arms or rear swaybar, and w/o bumper cut-outs. I've personally inspected the block and verified the numbers, but I'm no master at detecting fraudulent stamping. The body numbers are correct and the th400 has the correct stamping indicating originallity.

The build sheet says white vinyl roof and N10 dual exhaust package. I'm pretty sure ALL SX cars got the dual cutout bumpers and Halo style vinyl roof instead of the full vinyl. The code for the SX package is Y79 as you obviously know, so if it doesn't appear in the build sheet, I would suggest this is only a Cutlass Supreme with some nice options and an axle that's good for highway use (2.56:1)
There were 68,309 CS Holiday coupes produced in 1970. From your build sheet it looks like the car body was sequenced for production at Fisher Body Works in the first week of February. From there it would go to Freemont for final assembly. Without doing the math, there were around 170,000 Cutlass cars built (overall production) that year, but I'm not aware if records were kept as to total production for each model at every plant.
Your build sheet suggests you have a very nice car to enjoy!

thanks for posting It is the first documented one I have heard about.
Did you find the build sheet on top of tank?
Mine is also a Fremont car, and my build sheet was there.
An 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme 455 without the performance add ons..I mean how cool is that.....and with a build sheet!
looks like your car was built in the first week of Feb, 1970....mine was the last week of Aug, 1969......time to look at build sheet more closely....

Soooo...a CS with a 455 from factory is pretty rare isn't it

With all due respect, Allan, the first week of February date on the build sheet is the scheduled build date at the Assembly plant in Fremont. The build sheet is an Assembly plant document. The Fisher Body build (also in Fremont) would of course theoretically pre-date that.

Don't be confused about the vinyl top, it was a halo-style top. It's not currently on the car, but I have all the trim. My original question was how this car fit into the production numbers, which was addressed wonderfully. (Thank You) However, do you ALL think the car would be worth more returned to factory, (esp now that I found the build sheet) or should I even think about a posi 3.23, boxing the ctrl arms/swaybar, alum heads, 442 intake, etc.? The drive-train is original and intact to the best of my knowledge... Points and arguments either way would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I'd say so. By CS, do you mean Cutlass S or Cutlass Supreme?
There were approx 8450 455s that went into Cutlass Supremes. Minus the 7197 SXs, that left about 1250 that went into Supremes that were not SX optioned.
There were 916 3600 series Cutlass/Cutlass S models that got a 455.
About 6500 Vista Cruisers got 455s.

Don't let anyone discount what you have - it is rare - N10 was mandatory w/the L33. You have what most of the supposed W30's & SX's don't - documentation. I tried to buy a 70 SX several years ago - some even registered on the SX website for sale - ended up they were fakes - I ended up buying a 442. Historically the 70 Olds have brought the most money unmodified. Be proud of what you have - do not change anything that you can't change back for resale value.

If it were in my garage, I would restore it to it's original condition in it's entirety....not missing a thing on the build sheet....

70 Cutlass Supreme convertible 455 not a SX
I was talking to W Machine earlier this year about my 70 Cutlass Supreme
convertible L33 455 without the SX package and I finally got around to scanning my build sheet (too many car shows and not enough time)
and thought you would like to see it. I've been a Olds fan all my life and have never seen another one.
Total frame off restoration on a Arizona car.

Did you keep the 2.56 axle? I'd want to upgrade that to at least a 3.08 given that it has an asphalt ripping 455 in it. Most all the Freemont cars have their build sheets found on the top of the tank. Some of the FRA ones are found under the seats or stuffed between the package tray and metal upper.
Just curious about the build sheet. It shows a bypass code of 2 and most of those I've seen with that involve special (extra cost) paint. Does this car by any chance have -- -- next to the A [ PNT code on Cowl tag ] ?

It still has the 2:56 gears and I like them (great on gas and with 510 ft lbs of torque it overcomes any laziness)
It's like a dog that you let off a leash when your on the highway.
It doesn't have any special marks beside the A.

there is that bypass code 2 again...same that appears on my Freemont build sheet for my 70 CS....I am starting to think it was common.
what does it read in Box 108? cannot make out the numbers after "Bypass"
Beautiful car BTW, and as Allan stated, the docs are a bonus...
