1979 5 speed
1979 5 speed
Hello, I have owned a '79 Cutlass 5 speed T-top. I just sold it to my friend. I have always thought that it was rare. Can any of you "super Olds heads" clue me in? It has a 260 V-8, 1st gear is left & back, no console, it has a very stiff suspention w/a huge front sway bar and one in back, (this car will not tip no matter how hard you corner it!), posi, wide rally wheels, reclining buckets, rally pack and the color is a metalic rootbeer brown. I have never seen the color and I've never seen another 5 speed and I have seen/looked at many many '79s. Even though it has a 260, if you hole-shot it, it will go sideways! I try not to do that too much because I don't think it would hold up to a lot of that sort of punishment like it's older counter parts. Has anyone else had experience with one of these? Are they in fact rare?
Yes, it's factory. The weak-kneed T5 was available behind the V6 and the 260, actually as early as 1976. At the Pomona swap meet last April there was a 1977 Cutlass with the 260 and 5 speed combo. Suffice to say that few of these were built.
My old '79 5 speed
Hey Thank You Joe! I've read many of you're post's, you're quite the "fountain of knowledge". Would you know how I could find out how many of these T-5 version '79's were produced? When I had decided to sell it I had a good 455 laying around that had the pilot shaft hole and thought about putting that in it, just to get more money out of it and realy make it a WOW! My friend said, "NO! you'll speed shift it once and spread the case. And besides you wouldn't want to sell something that would break so easily." So, it went down the road stock. Thanks again for all your input to everyone.
Hi. I have a 1979 cutlass supreme with a 260 V8 diesel and a 5 speed stick. I was told through the olds club that their was only 260 made with the diesel and 1500 with the gas engine. There was a real nice low mileage 260 gas one on ebay that had bids up to $7900 and didn't meet reserve.

I currently am selling my 1979 Calais Diesel 5 speed with T-Tops. It is all original with only 34,000 actual miles. It runs great and only needs minor cosmetic work. If anyone is interested please repond to this and I will reply. Thanks, whips5spd
