I need to replace the console shift cable on my 76 Cutlass but I haven't had any luck finding a replacement cable. The eyelet to eyelet length of the cable is 30".


Does anyone have any suggestions?

The GM part number for the cable you need is 416753... It should fit from 73 thru 76 (77??)... It is discontinued, but maybe a GM dealer can try a parts locator search... It's a long shot, but you never know what an old dealership might have on the shelf...

The Ebay cable looked to be the perfect solution but upon installation I was unable to accommodate the additional 1" length (31" vs 30") without binding.


A friend fabricated a stainless steel sleeve to provide support to the damaged portion of the original cable and this solution is working at this time.


Other than a major exhaust leak at the catalytic converter, everything works well and my 76 Salon is back on the road after 14 years.

 

I think you can get those through Rock Auto. I bought my Hurst shifter cable for the 76 through them. 75 hurst share the same console with 76/77 but with the opening for the Hurst dual gate.
Back to the point, I believe they have a stock replacement cable.

I wish that they did but I haven't been able to find one in their online catalog. Any idea what sub-section the cable is listed in?

 

Have you tried LOKAR ? I'm sure they would be pricey but that may be an option. I have the LOKAR catalogue ill take a look.
Have you checked out the new http//73-77oldsmobile.freeforums.net/ site ? Maybe someone would have an extra shifter cable over ther.

Dave,
Lokar shows console shifter cables for TH-350 and the TH-400.
It appears as thou they only come in lengths of 6-8-12-16 and 23" .
The column shifter cables go up to 32" .
The part number for the 23" is ATS6350A

Eric - Thanks for the input! From my experience with the other cable, I'll keep looking for the 30" length. Luckily for me the cable itself is not damaged, just the outer housing which is not under stress in this application.

That is actually the same cable as I purchased. The 31" length was the problem. If it was 30" then it would have worked well.

 

The factory cable is available through many sources. It was used on many other GM cars so look to others such as Camaro, Pontiac Firebird/TransAm.

 

The key is to find one that is 30" long. I have looked at a number of shift cables online but have yet to find one that is the correct length.

Now that is a bunch of shift cables! Actually, First77 pointed me to a NOS cable on Ebay and now I have it.


You wouldn't happen to have a dual exhaust crossmember, would you?

You'll have to get one from a 73 or 74 and then drill new holes in your frame for it to fit.
