1973 Cutlass 4 door coupe

I NEED SOME HELP this honestly is my first car and my couple weeks ago my friend was driving it and the car started to overheat and he didnt pull over. anyway needless to say he had managed to run it too long it filled the overflow bottle and emptied the radiator. well the car kinda just stopped running at that point the car was on but not running =/ so i came out to get him is my friends truck and check the damage ... by the time i got to him is had been about 5 hours later and he put more water in it and it fired but he barely made it to a gas station before all the water was gone and had dumped out the tailpip and somewhere from under the hood. I went ahead and assumed i needed at the very least new gaskets and that was correct but i dont want to try and fire it without knowing all possible issues.

oil had water in it.
i got a complete gasket kit.
my old man said a freeze plug might have blown and if that happened i might as well scrap the car because i could never in my wildest dreams afford to get the motor machined.

He overheated it to point of blowing a head gasket.

There's a reason the warning lights are called idiot lights.

Your "friend" owes you an engine, or at least the courtesy of paying for repairing this one.

+1. If he doesn't come up with the 1-2 thousand dollars or so that it will cost to disassemble, check, possibly machine the heads or replace some bearings (if it was run with coolant in the oil), and reassemble, then he's no friend (and you should sue for that amount in small claims court, or at least work him over with a baseball bat).

Also, a coupe is a two-door. There is no such thing as a "4 door coupe."

Welcome to ClassicOlds.

thank you

As far as it goes there was no anti freeze it was just water due to a bad radiator leak so i kept around 5 gallons of water in the trunk at all times
as far as getting it repaired we can clean it out and take it apart but i don't know how to know if anything would need to be machined.

would cleaning it and replacing the gaskets work or at least get it running till i find a suitable replacement motor? because believe it or not i do use it as a daily driver lol

You can pull the heads and replace the gaskets in a weekend with no guarantees. Not knowing the condition of the engine puts us at a loss on what to really suggest.

You may try looking on your local Craig's L and see if you can find a reasonably
priced small block, running engine. A quick swap would be Fairly painless. Less the
cost and labor. Your good buddy needs to Cowboy Up and foot the bill.
