I have a 1969 cutlass that needs a whole new floor pan, trunk pan, paint job, interior, body panels, and probably anything else you could think of. The car runs and everything and is functional except for a minor brake problem (explained below). I bought the car for 1,000 dollars and put maybe a little more than 2,000 dollars into it. The car needs a lot of work done on its body and something is wrong with the brake lights. I first bought this car hoping it could be my first restoration car and my first driver. Well I have found a car that is in a little better condition and would be easier financially and time wise for me to handle. I am only 16 and my dad is helping restore the car. So because I found this other car I want to sell my cutlass, I knew it was going to be a lot of work but it is just way too much for me to handle. My dad thinks I wouldn't be able to get 3,000 dollars for my car because of the shape the body is in. I was just wanting peoples opinions on if they think that is too much or not. Also, if anyone has sold before do you think its possible for me to get 3,000 or what is a good price?

The car is all original
it has about 35,000 miles
it is a V6
2 barrel carb.
We had the carb rebuilt
power steering
power brakes
has original radio( not installed in dash)

We have not added these parts but we do have them and plan to add them to the car. Here are the following parts that we have:
-All new brake lines and hoses (stainless steel)
-All new gas lines and hoses( stainless steel)
-New gas tank
-new gas pump
-new brake pads and drums

All of that is probably 2,000 dollars if not more. If we don't get the chance to put the above parts on the car we still will obviously sell them with the car.

IF anyone wants to buy the car it would need to be towed because the brakes went out which is the reason for the new brake lines and everything. That is unless my dad and I get the brakes on the car.

I also have a parts and body manual on cd and books that by request I would also give to the seller with the car.

SO DO YOU THINK WITH ALL THIS I COULD GET 3,000 dollars? MY dad thinks that even if we add the stuff to the car we won't be able to get the 3 grand. LAST, if YOU are interested in buying the car let me know! I can get you pics and anything else you want.

from your description...the verdict doesn't look good(IMHO)

I'd say you're gonna take a hit.

Why not stay the course? Get the brakes fixed...no biggy.
Drive it for awhile, see if you like it.
It's good advertising if you decide you still wanna sell.

 

Doesn't sound like It's worth the trouble. Put $50 worth of brake lines on it, and drive it till it explodes, or part it out. Hopefully there's some good panels left on the car. If you decide to part it out, try and line up a list of parts buyers before you take it apart. That way you don't have to trip over everything for 6 months.
69 stuff is harder to come by than 71-72, so hopefully you get some people interested. Try your ad on Oldspower.com and Realoldspower.com too.

It's not all original if it really has a V6. The only Cutlass engine options in 1969 were the 250 cu in INLINE six (that would have come with a single barrel carb) or one of several Olds 350 V8s. Better count spark plugs again.

Unfortunately, you'll be hard-pressed to get $1,000 for the car. Without pictures, it sounds like you've got quite a rust bucket. Cars in that shape are readily available. As you've found out, sheet metal work is expensive if done right. Your best bet might be to part the car out. Any car is worth more in parts than it is assembled. Ebay is your friend.

Its a V8... I don't know why I was thinking V6.

 

I am going to try to get pictures as soon as I can. Ive been trying to this week but have been really busy to were I either forgot about it or didn't have time. Just so you know I still am not sure if I am going to sell. BUT there is a possibility. I am located in Illinois.

 

Well it seems to be a biggy for my dad and I. Ive had the parts for almost 3 months now and nothing is getting done. He came home the other day and said he was talking to one of his buddy's from work. The guy told him its impossible to change out the brake lines without taking the car off of the frame. Is this true?

I've changed every brake line on my 70...frame on.
Good kits come with all the factory bends, it's quite easy if you take your time. Spray everything with some PB Blaster a few times.
Sounds like you might be on your own though if your Dad's not gonna help.

Brake lines are not hard, but a bit of a pain in the butt to do if you don't have a hoist.

Just make sure you spray all connections down with penetrating oil and let it set for a few days. I find it easiest to just cut the lines off at the fittings and then use a 6 point box wrench to unscrew the fittings. Make sure you have identified which is the replacement line before cutting the old one.

I might be interested in a 69' Parts car if you part with yours. Personally, just fix it up and get it going. All the parts are available. I am rebuilding with a friend of mine a 69' Cutlass that was basically a parts car in way worse shape than yours, but has sentimental value so its getting rebuilt.
