1968 Cutlass S Alignment issues
1968 Cutlass S Alignment issues
I recently just purchased my 2nd Cutlass. I always loved the body style of the 68 and yesterday I was able to find a convertible that is just want I want. Unfortunately that means I need to sell my 70 SX but that is another story. Most of the 68 is in pretty good shape, but there is some alignment issues. The first one I want to fix is the hood. It is a little popped up. Is this something I can fix by adjusting the hood hinges or are the hinges themselves just bad. Here is a picture:

Here is a picture of the hood hinge.... I thought there was a bolt that could adjust. Is there? Anything else I can do to adjust?

Do any of these bolts "adjust" the hood?

The lower hinge holes are slotted to allow alignment...loosen lower attaching bolts one at a time to adjust up or down. You could loosen a bolt a lot to see which way the slot is oriented, and then go from there...
Your hinges look fine to me. I've done some hood aligning, and it ain't the easiest thing to do, but as Yellowstatue says, the bolt holes allow adjustment.
The procedure in the manuals is to loosen the bolts just enough to be able to slide the hood around, close the hood all the way (gently but firmly), and then push it around, up a little over here, down a little over there, a little sideways over there until you get it lined up everywhere.
Then open the hood just enough to get one of your arms and a socket wrench in there, being careful not to slide it in the bolts, and tighten up the bolts. Then check it for alignment again when closed, and as the manuals are famous for saying, "repeat as necessary."
I found in my case that I had to repeat the procedure a couple of times, but you get the hang of it, and I was able to get a good alignment on my hood.
