A Guy in Massachusetts just finished this 1938 Plymouth on Friday. Saturday was to be a shakedown drive of about 50 miles just to see how it was.
Driving along, his left rear wheel came off. The car dropped and the gas tank was punctured. The rest, as they say is history.
He said all 5 lug nuts had come off and the studs were stripped on the updated 1990 Explorer rear end.

That's really sad. Another case of not doing a final check out before the test drive. Seen it happen more than once.

always make sure to do a final "nut & bolt" check before the test drive. Hopefully he had called it in for proper insurance BEFORE that point. I lost front wheel once on my 69 skylark. Those old damn "unilug" american racing mags that had to be torqued good & tight before you drove anywhere on em. Came off with little to no warning in about 2 miles flat. Thankfully it had drum brakes and just landed on the drum and I was able to get it stopped safely. Had to hike about 1/4 mile into the woods to find the wheel & tire, took a few lugs off each of the other wheels to put it back on and drove her home at about 5mph til I was back and could go out and buy some new replacement lugs for it. Lesson learned the hard way, but thankfully not as expensive as this poor guy.

How can you not know the studs are stripped when you put on a wheel???

Hopefully he walked away from it with nothing more than upset feelings. Another Insurance claim to be paid.....

Easily....they won't tighten up. That's why you use a torque wrench.
