Fun story to share

Yesterday evening I was surfing the local Craigslist and spotted a mirror that looks very much like the outside door mirror on a 1969 Hurst Olds. It turned out to be aftermarket, but being a packrat I bought it anyway.

So this turns out to be a car guy and we start swapping stories. He's showing me a picture of the last car he rebuilt/street rodded and it was a Henry J. But another picture on the wall caught my eye. It's a black and white of a little boy standing by the front fender of the Olds Prototype car (1954?) that recently sold for a bazillion dollars. So I asked what the story was behind it. His Dad used to be a salesman at the local Oldsmobile dealership. When this guy was about 5 years old the "Road Show" came to town, the two busses that folded out displays and they brought this prototype with them. He told me there was a rope with signs to stay out around this car, but his Dad lifted him over the rope and told him to stand by the car while he took a picture. Now how cool is that!

Was that the Olds F-88 - the competition for the Chevy Corvette that, as I understand, was eventually squashed by Chevrolet? There's a feature story of the month at www.wildaboutcars.com regarding the F-88.

I would guess it was the Parade of Progress tour by GM. The buses were probably GM Futureliners which also sell of a gazillion dollars. That has to be a way cool picture. Here is a link to the Futureliner. I would love to see one some day.

It was squashed by GM because it would have squashed the Corvette. The Corvette had a 6 and the Olds had a 324 Rocket V8. So again Olds was told to stand down.
