Planning my visit to Lansing for the Homecoming weekend

I try to find something interesting or different to do on every trip I take. The annual Oldsmobile homecoming is no different. Some of the roadside detours we have taken over the years include:

A visit to the Bath school memorial and museum. For those unfamiliar with this story, the worst school bombing took place at the Bath school building in 1927. I first learned about it years ago, I didn’t know until recently that Bath was only about 20 minutes from Lansing. Once I found out it was so close, I had to see the site. It’s interesting and very tragic at the same time.

We visited and paid respect to the man that started it all, Ransom Eli Olds family mausoleum.

We visited Michigan state university, and took some pictures of the Magic Johnson statue. Earlier in the year I was in Terre Haute, and took pictures of Larry Birds statue. I wish I could have seen them play live.

Last year, we found the Demmer Engineering buildings. I was surprised to find they were still there.

Obviously, we have visited the site of the Oldsmobile assembly plant, and the Oldsmobile museum.

My question: what else is there to see or do in Lansing? We plan to arrive early afternoon on Friday for the diamondale cruise, Last year was my first year for that event, and my family enjoyed it far more than I would have expected.

Suggestions?? Is anything left of the Story Oldsmobile dealership? If so, I might have to check it out. From what I understand, that was the largest Olds dealer.

I am old enough to have seen them both in college and pro! I have 3 1980 Topps rookie basketball cards with Bird, Erving and Magic on the same card. Erving would not have been a rookie at that time. Lansing is not exactly a tourist town. Could take in a game for the Lansing lugnuts AA pro ball. (used to be Oldsmobile park) Michigan history museum $8 admission, free on Sunday. Also suggest to go to Funtyme, Mini golf, arcade, go karts, driving range and batting cages.6 miles from the show car field.

How long are you planning to be in the area? If you're driving in Friday afternoon for the cruise, attending the show on Saturday, and leaving Sunday morning(?), that doesn't leave much time for touring, unless you're staying longer.

Also, do you include the possibility of seeing things along the way, perhaps with a little detour involved?

I ask because one of the most bucket of bucket-list places to visit, in my opinion, is the Gilmore Car Museum in Hickory Corners, which is just northeast of Kalamazoo. If you've already been there, please ignore this.

It's about an hour to the southwest of Lansing, so it's sort of on the way to or from central Indiana. It would be well worth any time you can spend there.

To the east of Lansing about 50 miles in Flint is the Sloan Museum of Discovery. It has many different things, including the Durant Vehicle Gallery.

The museum sponsors a car show every year, but not the same weekend as Homecoming.

Just a couple of thoughts.

It’s been awhile, but I have been to the Gilmore museum. I was looking for little things to see or of interest along the way.

My big Michigan road trip is in about a month. I’m leaving the Saturday before the big St Ignance car show, and having absolutely zero plans or destination other than meeting my wife and kids on Thursday. So I’ll be looking for suggestions for things along the eastern part of Michigan.
