After being harassed to switch windows 10 after a million promps I complied. Now the computer no longer can find my camera downloads and they are no longer in the camera chip. Any idea what happened? How do I fix this... Tedd

If you can no longer view them through the camera while the card is in there then they have some how been deleted from the card. If the images are important then do not use that card at all the files can be recovered. They make consumer recovery software last I looked usually around $29.00 and one of them should do the trick. As far as your computer not seeing your camera that is most likely a driver issue and you would want to go to the cameras manufacture website and see if there is a driver available for win 10. If not just get a cheap external card reader.

 

You may have to download and reload the driver for the camera on your pc.

 

A few comments:

I have upgraded several computers from Windows 7 or Windows 8 to Windows 10. The upgrade process does not touch your computer's "Libraries" (videos, music, pictures, documents). Those directories and files should be right where they always were after the upgrade.

What about the other data files on your computer? Do you have any spreadsheet files, Word files, pdf files, or anything like that? Can you still access those? Any saved music or videos? Can you access those? If the answer to any of these is yes, you should just as easily be able to see any photos stored in the Pictures library or anywhere else as some people just dump everything into the Documents library.


As far as the camera and connecting it to the computer, you should not need to download any drivers. When connecting your camera to a computer with a USB cable to a USB port, the computer sees the camera as just another disk drive with a drive letter (F:, or something like that) just as it does when you plug in a flash drive. Windows has drivers built in to access these, or it will download what it needs from the web. I've never plugged a camera or flash drive into a computer that wasn't able to be read by that computer after waiting a minute or so for Windows to "install" it.


One thing I would do before spending any money on file-recovery software is verify that corrupted files on your camera's storage card is really the problem. I would plug the camera in to another computer and see if that computer can read the camera's photo files. Can you find one that still runs Windows 8 or whatever version you were running before? Or, as has been suggested, remove the memory card and plug it into a card reader on your computer if you have a computer that has one or can find a computer that has a card reader. If you can't find one, go to Walmart or any place that prints photos as they will certainly have the necessary equipment to read pretty much any medium (CD, DVD, flash drive, memory card, camera, etc.) that a customer might bring image files in on.



As a general rule, I never leave photos on my camera's memory card. It's too easy for something to go wrong and the image files to get corrupted. Whenever I take any photos, I download them to my computer at the end of the day and then run my backup software (you DO have a backup program and a drive to back files up to, don't you?). If I'm vacationing, I have my laptop along and move the image files to the laptop at the end of each day.

My sister used to keep every photo she took with her smartphone ON her phone. She had hundreds of images on her phone, some very important to her, and I told she was one dropped or lost phone away from losing them all. She has since moved them all to her computer.

 

I have a feeling the computer is not reading the card and the card itself is fine also. I've run into this problem a few times with mine. Worked fine for years then stopped reading the card through the camera. Sometimes another USB port made it work, other times I had to try a card reader or another camera and it would work fine. It's hit or miss still but one of the three methods usually work for me. That or swearing for an hour and coming back plug it in and it works fine.

 

The USB port may be turned off also.

 

BINGO! I switched cameras and to a a USB rather than having the card read through the port on the computer and everything seems to be working fine now. For some reason the card port appears to have died. May or may not have anything to do with the switch from windows 10 but if I had to choose between Windows 7 or 10 I would go back to 7. For me it was easier to navigate.Most likely because I'm old like Windows 7

I switched to windows 10 and with a non-touch screen lap top it just was horrible so I switched back. Very glad I did.

 

Tedd, congratulations on solving your problem. It's very upsetting to lose pictures and info which cannot be replaced easily.

Yes it is! My little point and shoot Nikon just went bad on me (lens remains retracted when on) and was full of pictures of my dad and I hunting pheasants and some other family events probably for the last times as he is 89. those pictures don't show up in the camera or in the computer. Probably lost in space somewhere?..... Tedd

 

Tedd, the Nikon Point and Shoot should have a memory card.If you can take the card out ,the pictures should still be stored on the memory card.Then take the memory card anywhere that makes regular printed photos,and have prints made. Hope this works,I know how much those photos of your dad means to you and the family.
Any major drug store also has a way to enlarge the picture of your choice and put it on canvas for a minimal fee.Don't pass up the opportunity to get the best one of your dad hunting.

I'm with you on this one and not old but if they are giving free windows 10 what is the motive......7 is far easier to me to use.

 

Tedd,once you remove your memory card,your computer should have a place to insert the card, then you can download them to your computer. If you buy another Point and Shoot ,keep the card and you can put in in your new camera to view anytime. Larry

 

There is nothing on the memory card at this time. Unfortunately I checked a box that allows the computer to remove all the pictures that are in the camera after they are downloaded so that part of the process worked but not to my favor..... Tedd

 

Sorry ,I didn't know that you checked the wrong box and made them vanish. That's a shame, guess you'll have to try to get lots more pictures of your dad every chance you get. Best of luck,

Not everything with Microsoft is what it appears to be. Banks, just this past year, switched from XP to Windows 7 for all the ATM's. Windows 7 is going to be around for a lot longer than most would expect. They are just trying to get everyone to upgrade, so they can get money out of you later on.
