What kind of Bug is this?

Cleaning up the basement of my rented townhouse I cam e across this dead bug in a sink. Click on it and then click again a choose full screen to see it up close and personal.

It would have lived in a dark unfinished basement for most of its life. Looking at the back legs I bet it could jump 20 feet. I only lived here for bout a year and a half and never came across one of these. I am in northern Virginia near Washington, DC. Any guesses?

I am sure it ain't no silverfish. I know they don't have these in Ancaster, On (where I lived 2001-09) or Nova Scotia. I agree with the alien description.

I don't like those long back leg things. That means it can prob jump on you from a distance and bite you rendering you immobile for several minutes with its potent sewer venom. Then it calls it friends in to join.

Damn you are good! You know your Olds and VW's.

Adam

P.S. They do prey on people. As you stumble in the dark they leap straight for the juggular. You have about 5-7 seconds to bleed out while hearing a squeaky little voice singing "When you wish upon a star, Makes no difference who you are, Anything your heart desires, Will come to you."

Living only minutes from the Oregon Caves, he should know!
I saw them described onthe boards there.

It would take big legs like those to get around in a cave.
Sounds like they have a fun life - just take a LONG flying leap to see if you smack head first into a wall, fall into a black hole, or into a pool of water only to be carried to who knows where...

We have 'em on East Coast too. I find one in my bathtub every so often; apparently they like water. Just can't figure where and how they come in. They don't spook me, but like most crickets they like to sing. In the middle of the night.

Nope, don't have anything like that around here. But if I see one now, I will know to run the other way.

Blech!
I'd run and get my wife to liquidate it and then get out of the house lickety-split.
You should of seen what happened when a mouse I had her pursuing ran all the way up the inside leg of her pants when when she was trying to catch it.

I have had those in the basement. They can grow quite large. Up to 6-8 inches long. Sometimes they creep around and night and are attracted by carbon dioxide - which is what u exhale when you breath. They will crawl onto and into your bed....and can start to bite. They haved been know to crawl into ears too where they often will then lay their eggs. If you're a big snorer beware they don't get in your mouth and choke you.

It's a common mole cricket, two years ago we had them in droves, completely harmless. However can freak you out if it jumps on you while asleep!!! I have to admit, I really enjoyed the "Evil Dead" reference though, even if in bad Latin!!! Relax

Are you sure.... He could be quoting Helen from The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) which Ash quoted. Did you like Bruce Campbell VS The Army Of Darkness? To quote the back of the DVD...

"The one and only Bruce Campbell stars as Ash, a hapless housewares clerk time-warped back to the dark ages by the demonic power of the Necronomicon. Now armed with only a '73 Oldsmobile, his trusty chainsaw and a 12-gauge double barreled S-Mart shotgun, our knuckleheaded hero must battle vicious she-bitches, a diabolical Evil Ash and the rentless hordes of the midevil dead in the most outrageously spectactular horror comedy evermade."

Wow that was all one sentence.

THIS IS MY BOOM STICK!

Bad Latin! OK maybe I didn't get every little syllable, but basically I got it right.....Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave the forum.... Actually I was paraphrasing "The Day the Earth Stood Still" but I love Army of Darkness...so do my kids.

Good.....Bad........I'm the guy with the gun!!!!

Alright yes, I have the trilogy, I have an original framed Army of Darkness poster, I have the motion activated, quote reciting, Ash action figure (a birthday gift from my sister)..........Look, the guy has a quick wit, is handy with both a shotgun and a chainsaw and drives an Oldsmobile to boot. Yeah I dig the movie, but we digress from the bug issue at hand...

I saw the Evil Dead solely based on the Oldsmobile reference.. Does that make me an addict, or worse, a fanatic? Not only was a mutant bug identified in this link, but 2 great movies were also referenced, and some withactual dialogue! "Gimmie some sugar baby"
