Topless 76 Salon

Eh la. Saw it today when I stopped to grab a hotdog for lunch. Roof was toast under the VT so they cut it off and reinforced everything.

You know, this body style could have made a good looking factory ragtop.

Not too bad looking... Would hate to get caught in the rain though...

That looks pretty good. He could get a Carson top made for it and he'd be good rain or shine.

I noticed the velour-like cloth seats. Nice - no burning your legs and behind when getting in after the car's been sitting in the sun.

It really don't look that bad. I would have put marine grade vinyl on the seats and marine carpet on the floor with some drains for when it rains.

Just one thing, it isn't a 76, 86 maybe. There was a company that converted G body's to converts. this might be one of their's.

Zoom the picture and guess again. There's nothing remotely G body about this car. And I've been around Oldsmobiles long enough to know the difference.

I don't believe it is any doubt it is a 76. The first picture is a 76 and the second is an 86. Proof is in the pictures.

Everybody is correct. My mistake on the year. However I have seen this conversion done by an aftermarket coach builder.

I wonder if he boxed the frame. If not there will come a time the doors don't open or close. Now I am getting off track.

He didn't mention frame but did say the body structure had been reinforced.

I did this back in the day on a 74 and a 76 supreme that had seen one too many north east Ohio winters. Sawzall and bondo. Great summer fun. I put a blue tarp and bungee cords to keep the rain out while parked.

Those Salon seats are awesome. Wouldn't mind getting another 76 Salon to restomod.

We were tempted in grad school to take the roof off a 90s Chevy station wagon, bulkhead behind the front seats, weld all doors but those, waterproof and vinyl shower liner the new "bed" and make a rolling hot tub.

Saner minds prevailed.
