Temp spare tire needs replaced

I have an 07 Mustang GT for the wife, the temp spare needs to be replaced. I know most car manufacturers have been using them for quite some time. Where do you get a replacement tire?

Here's a full spare tire kit available from Ford.

I went through this with my sons car, they were no help with an old Focus. Ended patching the old spare tire for now.

I'll wind up with at best an old tire, 2009 was the last year of this body style. After that wheels changed to accommodate bigger brakes and don't know if I can use a later model wheel and tire. I think 2012 Ford did away with spares.

Some dude on a forum said:

I have a regular tire in my 07 mustang spare tire well. It is just a tiny bit too tall, and the lid stays up just a small bit, but it is worth it to me to have a "real" tire for a spare. It is a stock size on a stock rim.
You could get a full cheapie rim some place then re-tire with your choice if she'll tolerate the lid being up a little.

This is the route I'm going to take. Mount a cheap tire on the temp spare steel rim. The tire well dimensions in the trunk are 27.125 diameter x 8.75 deep. The current spare tire size is a T185/60r17, 7.28 section width x 25.74 diameter, the steel rim is 7" wide. The stock tire is a P235/55r17, 9.25 section width, 27.18 diameter, it won't fit. The tire I'll go with is a P215/55r17, 8.46 section width, 26.32 diameter. Should fit nicely @ $70 out the door.

Final update, could not use the steel wheel it was only 4" wide and not the 7" that I though it was. Ended up with a cheap aluminum wheel and some lugnuts that fit it. Mounted a 215/55r17 cheap tire on it and about $200 later it was out the door. Now I don't have to listen to the wife complain or need to worry about the goofy spare anymore.

Firestone tells me they can get T (donut spare) tires, but I haven't tested them.
Simple Tire and Tire Rack usually have a few listed.

Agreed it's surprising how difficult this is. You'd think they'd be more common as it is a definite safety problem, but if no one cares and no one spends the money.....

There are T tires out there, just not that size, but why spend a kings ransom on a tire that has a shelf life and wears out pretty quickly when god forbid you actually have to use it.
