Say hey!
Say hey!
All my heroes are leaving. Willie Mays is gone, aged 93.
"The Catch" in Game 1 of the 1954 World Series is still one of the finest plays ever executed.
He was also on the ground floor of pro athletes doing public service announcements. As a kid I didn't know anything about blasting caps but I was sure aware of them after this.
Then in 1962 the state four-laned US58 and the power company started construction on the powerplant where I made my career, so there were probably blasting caps around.
RIP Willie Mays, 1931-2024.

Willie had complete mastery of all 5 skills necessary to be one of the all time greats. He hit for a high average, hit for power, could run like a deer, an unbelievable fielder, and a rocket arm. I was a pretty decent baseball player, a Centerfielder just like Willie, and he was my idol. Easily the best to ever play that position. Brought a tear to my eye when I read he had passed. RIP Say Hey Kid!
