Road trip north coast Crescent City

Well we didn't make Oregon this time, just not enough time but we were about 15 miles from the Oregon border then got sidetracked. The good we had a great time , the bad no classic car pictures, we took the wife's Mazda.

Here are a few shots of the ruins of the town of Mount Shasta. This was a old mining town in the 1860's and only a few buildings are still standing. the last two are of the Trinity river, looking good despite the drought.Tedd ...more to follow.

Summer time in the mountains means there will be delays for road repair, we spent awhile looking over the same spot while people leaned on shovels and talked.

There were times when the wildlife was out and about to be observed. here are a few shots from various places on the coast.

Ocean world in Crescent City, just a tourist thing

Spent a hour or two at the Ocean World. This is the place where you can do the touchie feelie thing with things that live in the sea like sharks and sea urchins. Actually they put on a educational show and well worth the time and money, had fun....Tedd

Fishing trip that wasn't

Our fishing trip was a bust other than a rough boat ride we didn't get to wet a line. The wind came up(30 knots) and we crept back to the harbor. Here are a few shots of the docks and boats in Crescent City harbor...Tedd

I kinda have a thing with old buildings, both restored and the falling down types. here is a whole town with victorian styled buildings restored to the nines just like it was 1890....Tedd

The last few

Here we are driving through the hole in the redwood tree, second one we have done this to, first was in the Olds. It was very dark because the intense shade the forest makes but you will get the idea. Pictures don't do those magnificent trees justice. Well thats it folks I hope you enjoyed this as much as the wife and I did making it ....Tedd

The pictures of the Victorian style buildings looks like Eureka. I was stationed there for two years - 1976-1978. My oldest son lives there now. My brother used to live in Crescent City and he belonged to the "Northern Knights" car club. It was always fun going there to the car shows put on by the club - surprisingly high turnout of cars each year for such a small town.

You are Correct it is Eureka. and I have be told of that show by others who have been there and wanted me to go with them.

My dad was stationed at Fields Landing just south of Eureka during WW2 it was supposed to be the foggiest place in the states and he worked on ways to lift fog so aircraft could find a runway in the fog. As I remember him saying nothing worked ....Tedd

When I first went to Eureka in May 1976 the cutter I was stationed on (Coast Guard Cutter Comanche) tied up at Fields Landing. It was kind of amazing because we were always on 6 hour standby but, when the tide was out, the ship sat on the bottom and there would have been no way for us to get out until the tide rose again! We moved to the Foot of Commercial Street in downtown Eureka in October 1976 and the moorings there were so much better than what we had at Fields Landing.

I see the car show in Crescent City this year is on the weekend of October 9th.

Nice places to visit!

We did the same trip 2 years ago Labor Day. We hit every redwood park, love those trees! It was on my bucket list to see those trees. I like it so much I put seeing them again back on the list. Ken

Kinney, As much as I enjoy the northern part of California I really fell in love with the Oregon coast. Same beautiful trees and ocean but much better access to the coast and in the off season not nearly as polluted with people. If you get a chance to venture into this part of the country do it you won't regreat it....Tedd

Oregon coast is where I grew up - Coos Bay/North Bend, to be exact. What's funny is that, when you grow up there, the grass seems to be greener elsewhere! But I do enjoy going back there to visit friends and even go out on the sand dunes when the weather is nice. On the really nice (and very rare) days when the wind is out of the east, the Oregon coast is the absolute best.

I'm heading out there this weekend for my 45th high school reunion at North Bend!
