Retirement

Well guys, I retired today. I am 71 and had contemplated it at the end of the two prior years. I really thought I was going to this past year but backed out at the beginning of December. Business has dropped off and the company announced a layoff of 35 people a month ago which would be effective today. It worked out pretty good for me as I received 11 weeks of severance (for 11 years service) and got paid for the week of vacation I had accrued. In addition I can draw 26 weeks of unemployment. So for working an additional 3 months it worked out pretty well. I have plenty of projects to do around the house. The biggest thing I have is restoring a 57 Chevy 2-door sedan that I have had for decades. It was never intended to be a retirement project but that is what it has turned into. It is a big project and will be my last car to restore. It will be a mild restomod with a Muncie 4-speed. Now if my knees and hips don't give out on me where I won't be able to use the clutch. My wife and I are going to do some travel and may wind up in some of your neighborhoods. I will let you know and won't show up on your doorstep. My heath is very good so I am looking forward to retirement.

You will enjoy every minute. I'm 73 and just returned from Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas. Been retired many years and have loved every minute.

Congratulations... There's nothing like retirement... Now you can do what you want when you want... Provided the Mrs. agrees...

Very nice! I wish I could be retiring. I have 24 years in at where I work, another two decades and I will be at the full benefit age!

Enjoy the "golden years"

Congratulations! My dad retired from a long life in the coal mines. Hardest working man I have ever known. He has filled his retirement days so full of everything he has ever wanted to do and now says he does not know how he ever had time to work, lol.

Congratulations Red, I retired last year and just love it. It's so nice not having to hurry to get your project done on the weekend because you have to go back to work Monday morning. Enjoy yourself, start working on your 57 Chevy and do it at your pace- no hurry. If someone stops by and asks you to ride to town with them go ahead and go, you can work on the project tomorrow, Enjoy yourself...

Congratulations... enjoy your new found freedom from work.

I retired many many years ago, and every day I get up with nothing to do, and by noon, I have half of it done, so I stop, so I will have nothing to do tomorrow.

X2

Congratulations Glenn. You're going to love retirement.

I accepted an early retirement package from Digital/Compaq/HP back in 2003. I couldn't turn down the package they offered. At 53, I was too young to not work, so I started doing things I wanted to do with part time jobs. Jobs with no "heavy lifting " (no pressure and no stress). After 30 years in high-tech, I slowed the pace down, and bought the '56 Super 88 to play with. And we're up to five grandchildren now, all within an hour drive.

Way to go Glenn! It's always a struggle wondering when to go. I think everyone goes through that. I wish you all the happiness and success in the world as you start a new chapter in your life. Now comes the interesting days when you are your own boss and set your own time agendas.

Another advantage to your retirement is that us guys in the vintage car section can lean on you a little more for your expertise!

Good for you. Something I have heard retired guys do is to 8 to 5 your honey dos and your hobbies, that way you can relax in the evening but feel satisfied.
