Punctuation saves lives!

I'm not perfect and I'll be the first to admit it. But, I just read a couple of posts that were so difficult to follow. No capital letters, no punctuation. When you leave others to decipher your messages it can have adverse effects. Think about it... "lets eat grandpa" has a totally different meaning than "Let's eat, Grandpa!"

They're making it quite difficult to read their posts. I have stayed quiet about the posts there. I can think of some other words that get interchanged incorrectly too; more than two of them! Loose use of spelling and grammar causes some posts to lose their meaning.

It really irritates me when they write a post the same way they would send a text. I'm 25 and I don't understand half the BS that people use to shorten words and phrases. For Pete's sake, people, be somewhat literate!

Preaching to the choir.

Not the first time, either.

I have trouble expressing myself sometimes also but then again I blame it on Birdie my secretary of 12 years. She would take my mumblings and unorganized grunts and turn them in to something like prose that I could then submit as a presentation to some very smart buyers, some of us have it some don't. Just be patient and work with us who are typewriter and word challenged and we will all learn something about Oldsmobiles...Tedd

My favorite recent one is this, and it's not a punctuation error. When I saw the title of the thread, I honestly thought the guy's post had something to do with chickens.

https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...door-coop.html

He has since fixed it, but the title of the thread is still the way he first wrote it.

Then again, sometimes you express yourself too much!

I remember when I first started High School the counselor asked me if I wanted to take typing... I said are you crazy I'm going to be a auto mechanic, I'm not going to be a secretary. Now I hunt and peck and make lots of errors.. I never would have thought that the printed word would be so prevalent today.

With keyboards everywhere today, a "typing," or "keyboarding," as it's now called, class should be as mandatory a high-school class as English or math or social studies. All three of my children took keyboarding in high school, although I don't know if it was mandatory.

I took a typing class back when I was in the 7th grade in 1969 using my portable Hermes Rocket typewriter (which I still have, although I haven't tried to buy a ribbon for it in about 30 years), and it was one of the smartest things I ever did. I'm not a whip-fast professional secretary, but I can use all nine of the fingers I'm supposed to. (The left thumb is not used, at least the way I learned it.) Actually, it was because this typewriter is called a "Rocket" that I became interested in Oldsmobiles. (Not true. I just made that up.)

No "escape" key on this one!

Tedd, you may not be "perfect," but you're not the kind of guy people are taking about here.
Nobody here expects everyone else to be a dedicated sycophant of Messrs. Strunk and White, just to put in enough effort to make themselves understood, which you certainly do very well.

What I believe Rocket was talking about when he started this thread is the people who just don't give a fig, and are happy to rub your eyeballs in that fact by using incomprehensible language to ask you to go out of your way to help them.

My hope is that we don't run someone off this board because they left off a comma or misspelled Oldsmobilley. There is too much drama in this world to have it carry over to this board, not worth getting my panties in a wad ( big panties), if I can understand their intent even though I had to work at it a little I'm good to go. I'm here for the fun and the spreading of knowledge not much else matters. ...Still lost in the fifties again....Tedd

Yes, I'll make a correction. Don't overreact. No one here is acting like "spelling/grammar police." All that us "complainers" have ever asked for is a little courtesy on the part of message posters to make their messages readable.

Whenever we do, though, we get posts like yours which are a gross overstatement of what we're trying to say.

Talk about overreacting what is with the anger. I bet the veins were popping out on your neck the whole time you were writing this reply. Chill there buddy, just because someone struggles with spelling or grammar does not mean they are not courteous.

No anger at all, buddy, and my veins are just fine (thanks for asking). Just trying to correct your characterization as mean-spirited comments earlier in this thread that were never intended that way. Who, after all, just brought the word "police" into this?

The comments, such as the very first posting in this thread, are not directed at people who are "struggling with spelling or grammar." They're directed at people who write terribly, know better, and don't give a damn.

I must say, I need to agree here and will add to this thread, my thoughts.....My wife is a middle school teacher here in NY. She showed me an email yesterday from the PRINCIPAL of the school. In that email, he was trying his best to give a rah-rah speech to the teachers considering how the new regulations in this state have basically put all teachers on notice for the decline in state test scores and graduation rates! Teachers will be held accountable for student's failures......in the email he stated, "I know this has been a ruff year...."

Pardon the abuse of the "Queen's english"

Do we need to go to the extent of "blimey" and "bloody 'ell" and using extra "u"s all over the place? ;-) What colour did you say that was old chap? I used to be able to spell. Sentence structure? Well in english the rules are pretty incomprehensible, and there are always exceptions to the aforementioned rules. I'll keep hunting and pecking my posts (up to about 5 or 6 fingers in use now! Woooo Hoooo!) please bear with me...

There once was a man with a rocket
it all started with a rusty light socket
Now there are parts on the floor
need I say anything more?
This 'vert has burned a hole through my pocket!

Now, that's funny!
I assume you did that on purpose...

Does it annoy anyone when I use "xst" for "exhaust" for example?
Such is my typing that if I have spell it out, it takes me 3-4 tries to get it right.

So that's what xst means...you do know the accepted abbreviation for exhaust is exh?

Exh, ext, xst - I can figure those out, and they're fair if you're using the terms a lot and typing fast.

When I see the word "dizzy," though, I reach for my pistol, unless the poster is talking about how drunk he was last night.
("dist" is actually fewer characters).
