phony phone calls
phony phone calls
I got a call on my cell phone and a real live person said "Do you want to be removed from our calling list?" Quickly I knew this was a call to try to get you to say "Yes". Never give any kind of OK to any caller you do not know. They record your voice saying "Yes" and use it to hack into anything that relies on an OK from you.
I heard about this type scam a while back... It definitely could be a problem if you are caught off guard... Fortunately for me, I am a skeptic when it comes to phone calls from numbers I do not recognize and simply let them go to voice mail... Then after a review of the message, if its not someone I know, I also block the number...
Ive been getting calls that the ID says are local, and when I answer, its a f**kin' Indian call center trying to send me sh*t. Hope the guy who designed the Caller ID spoofing software ends up in a Covid infested ICU. Did you know that phone spoof/frauds are a multi-billion dollar drain on the US every year. And its mainly seniors who get screwed.
I wait for the unknown callers to go to voicemail also. If its important they will leave a message. I think the COVID infested ICU is too good for that guy. I think he should be locked in a room where all the person hears 24/7 is phones ringing, lots of phones ringing.
I do as the others, I don't answer any # I don't know. Sort of related... I get a lot of junk mail on my lap top. I opened one by accident and saw there was a unsubscribe spot so I clicked it. Up came a page that filled the whole screen and had no options except to continue and I couldn't get around it. I knew better that to click continue so I actually unplugged and took battery out of laptop. That did get rid of it. This stuff is like voodoo to me...
I just don't answer the phone when I don't recognize the number. Later I block the number (even though it does no good). I've been with Oldsguy (my dad) in the past when he gets a scam phone call and he threatened the person on the other end. Can't say that was a good idea but I'm sure the scammer deserved it.
One of the best things I ever used on a scam caller was to act like I couldn't hear them. I just start with "I can barely hear you" and continue with "I can still barely hear you" and do this several times and then hang up. You hear them literally yelling into the phone. I know they are in a call center and other people are starting to stare at them. Now with caller ID I just let them go to voicemail and then block the number.
I get up to five junk calls per day on my mobile. I use an app, Calls Blacklist, that doesn't ring my mobile if the calling number is not in my contact list. Callers can still leave a message.

1. If you don't know the sender, delete it (don't read it), just get rid of it.
2. Never click on a link.
3. If it looks like it's from your bank, utility company, government, etc..., don't reply to the e-mail. Call them directly on an actual phone, or go to their website using a new browser window (see rule #2).
I received a call the other day from AT&T that was in Chinese. I thought it was a prank and found out it was for real. When are we gonna see road signs written in Chinese? I guess we’ll have to get used to the Chinese culture. The new norm!
