This new Guy needs an Olds
Well first let me say thank you for letting join up with what looks to be a really intersting place to learn about Oldsmobile's
. In the last 15 years that I have had a licenese I have owned 3 mid 80's cutlass' it's brother the monte carlo, and a 1966 Delta 88 with a 425 ci torque monster. I loved having all 3 of the cutlass' and my favorite one was my 85 with t-tops. The only reason why I got rid of her was because I traded straight up for the 66 delta. I'm slowly but surely trying to build a budget so that I can purchase another olds. but it's just really hard to find them here in the Memphis, TN area without them being hacked up so that they can put enormous wheels under it and 80000000000000000000000000000 watts worth of sound system in the trunk. But as soon as I do find one I'm sure I'll be putting feelers out there to help with parts and tech advice as well.

Well to tell the truth I'm not originally from the south. I was born and raised the first 22 years of my life in NJ. It's a long story about how I got down here but lets just say there are parts of TN that are amazing that I'll never give up for anything but the city of Memphis is a whole other story. To much drama for my blood. The only thing that keeps me in this city is my full-time job at Fedex as a Ground Support Equipment Technician.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys. It means a lot. I wish could help on the shipping costs but unfortuntely they have cut down on the employee disunt to help save some money due to the economy. Anything is possible though once this stuff turns around.
Travel north up Millington way, you should see more up theer that that would be closer to your style since the Navy is up there. It seems reasonable to make the assumption that they would be more into the muscle car and/or original look. Good luck and welcome to CO.

Thanks again to everybody. To Oldsguy....Thanks for the tip. I do need to drive up that way and look around. The last time I was in/or around Millington or further north I found some really interesting stuff up there.

Well I haven't personally raced at MMP (Memphis Motorsports Park). The only drag racing I ever did was back up in Jersey with my 82 camaro and my buddies 72 chevelle. I've been to the track for a couple of events. The most recent was the ADRL event that they had back in May or June (sorry I work 2 jobs so I have a hard time remembering dates.) I took my step-daughter with me and she had a blast. When are the nationals? I might try and squeeze some time off to try and take her to that. I want to take her to something that has a little bit of everything as far as types of cars. You know what I mean, the guys that have built a car on a budget all the way to the guys that had no expense spared to achieve the best times. I like talking to the do it yourself guys. They know how to relate to someone who is working hard just like them to achieve what they really want and will also allow you to bring your kid over and show them the car and also show them what hard work can do in the long run.
Hey,its OCT.2-4,i think they moved it into oct. because the heats been brutal the last couple times.I've personally never been to a national event, the only thing is how far from the track you have to be.I like to get close, and feel it!glad to have you on the site, keep us posted about any OLDS action going on there.Later on,BO

Well as far as a National Event is concerned.... I've been to a few of them up in Jersey at Englishtown (Old Bridge Township Raceway Park is what it's called now but it will always be Englishtown to me and alot of other people.) As far as feeling it is concerned I'll say this. You can be sitting at the very top of the grandstands and when that 8000 + horsepower hits you will feel it throughout your entire body. But the nice thing about MMP is that on the spectator side if you are fortunate enough to get a front row seat at the nationals you will be no further than about 30-40ft. from the track. Any closer and you would be right next to the wall. Thats closer than at englishtown. I'll say this much, I have been that close a few times but I was right at the starting line but when those cars launch you feel like your whole body is about to vibrate apart. I love it to death. I will warn you of this if you or anybody that goes with you has any kind of a heart condition it's not a good idea to be that close because it might cause their heart to go into cardiac arrest. Thats why I haven't been to the nationals with my wife. She has a defibrilator/pacemaker in her chest from a major heart condition and her body just wouldn't be able to handle it. Now that I'm done ranting about that let me tell you about one other thing that in my opinion is alot better than feeling the cars make their runs down the track. It's when they are tuning the car in the pits right before they take them to the staging lanes. At Englishtown you could stand right next to the car!!!!! I always stood right next to the header pipe so that I could take in every last fume of nitromethane exhaust!! During the tuning process they crack the throttle several times to make sure it's hitting right and being right next to it, it hits you in your chest like you've been punched by a heavyweight boxer going for the K.O. Their is nothing like it in the world!!!!!
I can definitely understand them changing the date because of the heat and humidity. Like I've said earlier in this post I've been down here for a little over 7 years and I still cant get used to the summers here. I've always been a cold weather person.
I will definitely keep everyone posted on any Olds gatherings that may be occuring here in the mid-south area. And thank you for the awsome comment about me being a part of the group.

OH!Thanks alot! Now i won't be able to sleep i'm so fired up!COOL!Yeah that must be the thing ,my son,[I'm so proud]says he's going to be a ''turn around''guy for those drag teams, ever since he saw them.Thats going to be awsome to see first hand. Two top fuel cars came to HUNTSVILLE 1/8 once, can't remember the number, but it was over quick as you turned your head!My kind of fun,BO

I could only imagine what it's like to try and keep up with that much speed in the 1/8 mile. literally blink and it's over. wow! Sorry about getting you all pumped up. Never meant to cause you to loose sleep. I'll say this though, the first time I went where I was old enough to actually comprehend what I was about to see, hear, and feel, I was 17 and it was a High School Auto Shop field trip! When I got home that night I couldn't sleep for like 4 hours. All I kept doing was replaying in my head all I saw! I met John Force (unfortunately when he was still very arrogant and when he thought he was invincible/unbeatable) Joe Amato (I actually got to go into the pit area and hang out with the guys between qualifying rounds, that was just crazy!) Warren Johnson, Eddie Hill, Bob Glidden (he set a pro stock e.t. record that night in qualifying), and Kenny Bernstien. When Englishtown would have what was called the Night of Thrills, I got to meet Shirley Muldowney, Dennis Anderson (driver/owner of Grave Digger) and a few others that I can't think of. Oh I almost forgot when I was on that field trip I got to hang out and have lunch with Big Daddy Don Garlits. The only reason I got so lucky for that oppertunity is apperently my shop teacher at one point or another worked with Big Daddy back in the day. That was an awsome deal, to just sit around and talk to a legend about anything and everything.
I was kidding about the sleep thing, and was already fired up because i think i'm going to run a 7.for the first time tonite.Been running 8.20[1/8] consistant with a 8.11 best.I'ts going to be 62* tonite, good air.You know how rare that is in july!Good talking with you ,be back around sunday, later,BO

Yeah good air in this part of the country in July is like seeing 100 degrees in antartica any time of the year. It just doesn't happen. I hope your car ran good for you and you hit the times that were shooting for.
Hey,the weather is nice right now .Didn't get that elusive 7.99 though, dang ol car still ran the same 8.20s its been running since 2005.[looked at some old timeslips]So really nothing to complain about.I'll start being thankful for how reliable these cars really are, that is till i get the ''dream engine'' built!Did hook up with a machinist ,so thats good.
By the way, have you had many olds motors built?I'm looking for someone familar with these engines,in our genral area. Thanks, later,BO

First, let me apologize for my delayed response. I had 2 teeth surgically removed on Tuesday well afterwards I just didn't feel like doing much for 2 days. To answer your question though, no I never have had an Olds. engine built or attempt to build one myself. I have however done a little research on building one if the time ever presented itself. I know that if you want to make descent power out of a 455 (and still keep the monsterous torque) you are gonna need an aftermarket head. Edlebrock is about the only company I know that makes an affordable aluminum head that puts out great numbers. As far as a cam is concerned all I would do is call up Comp Cams (sorry I'm a little partial to them considering that they are right here in Memphis) and tell the tech guy on the phone what it is exactly you want the motor to do and what parts you are going to run. Hell they can even steer you in the right direction on what intake and carb to run to make the most out of your combo.
Hey,no problem,I usally log on once a day ,just to see whats going on.I found this site earlier this year,[wasnt a computer guy]and have been amazed at how much info there is,people here are very helpful too.I love it ,wished i had'nt been so stubborn and picked it up sooner.I browes[?] around other OLDS sites too,but this is my favorite.
I have a 72' cutlass s,I've owned it for 24 years. Its done some sitting ,but never for sale.I fell in love with this car, instantly!Never sold my first and i love it when the subject comes up.Also have an 83' cutlass,i bought about 3 yrs ago. What kind of car are you interested in getting?Later,BO

Well I would love to get an older cutlass like you've got and build it up into something that I would be really proud of but unfortunately I jumped on that wagon after Barrett-Jackson screwed that all up and caused prices for old iron to sky rocket. Unless I find a killer deal that I just can't turn down I'm just gonna stick with finding another mid-80's cutlass (preferably a salon with t-tops) and use that as the foundation to build a car that I can take the family around in and just cruise on the nice days and then when I just need to get crazy take it to the track and rip off a few high 11's-low 12's in the quarter. If I can do that then I will have fullfilled my dream.
Hey man, you'll just have to keep your eyes peeled, they are getting harder to find.A mid 80s on the other hand, can be found cheap. The one i have is an 83'cutlass brouham,no paint work,307 V8,350 trans,it was in the local shopper for 3500,which is way more than these cars genrally bring,so i thought, either this guys crazy...or its a nice car. I ended up giving 2850 and got a 403 engine he had too!!Anyway,I've owned a lot of mid 80s cutlass's there a good driving /riding cars. This one's going to my well deserving 14yr old son. We're planing a 455 swap,it'll be quick then.
I looked at a 80 cutlass this morning,n eeds alot, but it is a factory V8 car.You can really find a deal ,if your willing to start out with a V6 car, they can be had cheap down here.If your interested,i'll find out how much he wants. The guy rents a shop from my dad,so if i catch him at the first,i might steal it.I've been eyeing it anyway, like you i perfer the newer body style, later on,BO

Yeah I hear ya on getting a v6 car and going from there. Hell of the 5 gm g-bodies ive owned (1 Monte Carlo and 4 cutlass'), only 1 cutlass had the vaccum hose nightmare of a 307. The Salon with t-tops I owned was even a v6! I appreciate your offer to find out a price on that 80 cutlass for me but unfortunately the funds aren't there right now for me to pick up a project of any sort. I'm getting there but it's still gonna take some time. I've got a couple of guys I work with keeping an ear out and an eye open in case I can kinda barter some mechanical work in place of purchasing a car but no leads jsut yet.
Yeah man,BARTER!!Thats me right there,i've got a guy wanting to swap me the machine work on my heads for a paint job on his motorcycle, gotta touch base with him to.There are threads showing the complete swap, from V6 to small block or BBO,so theres plenty of help here ,when you need it.Later on,BO

Trust me I barter whenever/whereever possible. That sounds like a hell of a deal to paint his bike and he reworks your heads. I hope that deal pans out for ya. I know head work ain't cheap.

Damn, you've got a good group of people built up there that you can turn down stuff like that. I wish I had that many people to turn away like that.
