The *NEW* Good Morning Thread!
Mike - Understand about shooting yourself in the foot. Some folks prefer that method.
Why would the rally guy try to lose people heading up to the rally & think that is funny? Sounds like that **** knocker ain’t right in the head. Nice Corvair, Mike.

Thanks Norm. The rally is one of those where you have to look for landmarks and answer questions and those answers tell you where to turn, etc. He makes the questions trick so you have to think a minute, something you can't do in traffic. Most people have a "navigator," but still you can't hold things up while you decipher something. He's an okay guy but a little full of himself Corvair-wise, if you ask me.
Ah Ha. Oh. It's that type of rally. I thought it was a show car rally where folks simply attended showing their vehicles, etc. Yeah, I've participated in several of those but I've always had a navigator. They were actually very entertaining. It was this type rally (an Easter Egg Hunt) held on St. Patrick's Day (1971) which led to the demise of my 1968 VW Super Beetle.
Grab some popcorn.
I was living at home attending a community college (ECC) - the Easter Egg Hunt was a social event @ ECC (Elgin Community College). My girlfriend (Susan) was my navigator. It was night time in the middle of the corn, soybean & hay fields of Northern Illinois. We were on a back unlit gravel farm road as Susan was calling out the directions to the next treasure clue. Then, at the top of a little hill the road took an immediate right - on the other side of this little hill the embankment was quite steep and it was a large clover field. The bug failed to make the RH turn, slid forward from its momentum in the turn, caught the clover field, wheels/tires dug in, the bug flipped over twice sideways and once end-over-end - landing sideways on the passenger side. My hands were firmly on the steering wheel sitting in the driver's seat. I looked beneath me and saw Susan passed out in the passenger's seat (remember, the car is laying on the ground on the passenger's side). I crawled out through the busted out front windshield & after several minutes Susan came about & crawled out the busted out front windshield. We were astonished we were walking around without any broken bones, blood or bruising.
We saw several other cars navigate the curve and went right by us - all we could see were their headlights & tail lights - we were about 150 feet down the embankment in the hay field. Realizing no one would see us down the slope of the clover field we walked to the curve and more cars started coming by and we hitched a ride back to ECC.
The following day three of my friends and myself went to see about my bug. The four of us were able to raise the car and push it over on it's four wheels. The rear driver's side wheel went slamming into the mud of the hay field and the tire was flat. The roof was completely caved in - all the windows were popped out & the doors would not open (of course). I climbed into the car from the front windshield, pushed in the clutch, put the key in the ignition and the car started right up. The gearbox was frozen in 3rd. We raised the rear end, changed the wheel & tire and the farmer made his appearance. He asked how many were hurt. I told him no one. I told him I would pay for any amount of lost production of clover and bales of hay and he said I didn't owe him a thing. He asked how I was going to get the car out of the field to which I replied the plan is to start the car (he said you mean the car will run?), push the car down the hill so it is going fast enough to successfully stay running in third gear and drive it home (to Elgin).
I started the engine, my friends pushed the car forward for a little ways, the steep hillside did the remaining work getting the car going fast enough until I raised the clutch pedal and it engaged into 3rd gear. I waved at everyone on the hillside as I left & made a beeline for home (~20 miles away).
Managing not to hit one single red light along the way home, I pulled up in front of our house (my parents), pulled the key out and went indoors. Mom asked what I had done w/ the VW? I told her it's parked in front of the house. She went into the living room, peered out the front window and asked how soon it was being towed away? I explained I was going to sell it. Of course, this was met with laughter and the obligatory you're kidding me statements. I was again reminded that car couldn't remain on the street in front of the house. We lived in this very middle-of-the-road middle-class income suburban neighborhood. Dad arrived home from work that evening, and of course the discussion centered around that VW parked in the front of the house. I explained my plan to sell it. Dad wanted to know to whom I was going to sell it. I told him Tim Mahoney is looking for a bug engine and I think he might buy it. Hmmmm....dad thought about this. Dad went bowling each week and Tim Mahoney's father (a local magistrate judge) bowled with my Dad on this league.
Short story: I sold the entire bug for $400 (to Tim Mahoney). I paid $800 for it when it "was" in great condition. I now needed a car to get to my classes at the college. Susan (my girlfriend) and I went car shopping (I had no money) three days later. I found a 1965 Dodge Dart (deep red exterior, 1/2 black vinyl top, black interior bucket seats) on this dealer lot for $500. Now, how was I going to get $500. Welcome to the new world of "credit cards". I went to a local bank, filled out an application and they gave me a Master Card credit card with a maximum credit limit of $500. We went back to the used car dealer & I bought the Dodge Dart on my new Master Card credit card. I had just enough money to cover the taxes, title, fees & registration.
One heck of an Easter Egg Hunt.

Hi everyone.
Uneventful first day at work. Picked up Tiger a little while ago and now we are about to get ready for bed. I'm sure he'll appreciate a soft spot to sleep instead of the concrete floor.
Norm that's a good story. No so much for the VW. I've owned several VWs but don't have any stories quite like that.
My one contact lens developed a ridge of some sort over the weekend and I didn't have another one, so all weekend it was grinding into the top of my eye. I tried taking it out but that didn't work, one good eye and one bad eye equates to bad vision anyway. Even with a new lens my eye hurts like hell, and is very sensitive to light. Wish I had a potato. If it doesn't feel better tomorrow after work I'll go next door and see if my neighbor has one.
So I may have saved myself a trip to Year One and an extra day off. I want pre-bent fuel and brake lines, so they look all nice when they are put on, but they bend them in the middle for shipping. I asked if I drove up there and got them in person if they'd be straight, nope, they are received like that. With as much as I wanted to buy anyway, I can order it all online and get free shipping. Since it's going to look like $hit anyway with a big bend in the middle, even after I "straighten" it out, I could go to NAPA and get correct brake line with flared ends and make my own. Hm.
Dan how are you doing with your Hurst project?
Okay it's that time. Three more for me. Hope everyone has a good evening.

Hi everyone.
Slow day at work. Didn't look like we were going to make it but we did. We're still going in early.
Jamesbo hope the dentist did you right today.
Dan I'm confused. I thought you had a Hurst/Olds that you were taking the seats out of and were probably going to sell it. Not you?
Evidently it's been raining. And it's cold out. I think it will be a do nothing afternoon. Eh what's new.
Okay everyone have a good afternoon.

Mike, I have a W31.I was messing with you a bit. I did pull the seats, console, and carpeting. I will put it up for sale, I just don't want to. I have to get the (rebuilt) heads & intake out of the trunk to take pics of, along with some smaller items. I don't want to mess my back up anymore, and lifting the heads ain't so cool. I'm sorta loafing on it becuase my best friends son, told me a couple of months ago that his dad wants it, but he has money tied up in the restoration of his '70 442, so the timing is bad. Way back in 1996, he called me on this car that he spotted in the Wheels & Keels (merged with Auto Trader later). We went down to Kzoo to look at it. He really wanted it, but it was a project. He fussed big time about it because we always talked about cars the we should have bought back in the day (including a '69 W30), and did not want to let this one get away. He wanted a car that he could drive and tinker with, rather than a project (he later bought a '68 442 that was at Homecoming that he still has). Well, I was at his house watching him pace back and forth in the kitchen trying to decide to buy the W31 or not, he (and me) did not want it to slip through our hands. I did not want to interfere with his decision. Finally, after watching him pace back and forth for some time, I said that " I will buy it if you don't", he shot a glance at me, and kept pacing. I repeated it again a few minutes later, and he said "are you sure?" "Yep, I didn't want to affect your decision". He was relieved, because as stated above, he didn't want to let this one get away. So, I called the guy, and made the deal.
I washed my two (non-functioning) chimneys twice from the top down to the roof line during the past week. I capped and mothballed the chimneys years ago because the home no longer uses wood burning stoves and I sealed off the fireplace (w/ same bricks) in the living room. I spent 3-4 days replacing the shingle tabs blown off by hurricane Dorian & securing shingle tabs which literally were not being held down by anything. For whatever reason, the lines of rubber cement glue designed to hold the shingle tabs down was not holding anything down. They were not inexpensive shingles when I purchased them and did the R&R of the roof shingles 17 years ago. At any rate, I found about 30-40 shingles (which are still in perfect condition except not being held down w/ any glue) in which I applied roofing cement to tack them down securely - they won't be going anywhere for a long time & they should hold up great for any future wind events.
With the chimneys thoroughly cleaned I'm now ready to apply the Silane/Siloxane protective barrier. I'm watching the weather to ensure I have at least 48 hours of dry weather after application.
James - I've been working on my golf swing plane (arc). I've found the key to a significant improvement in my ball striking. I have moved my hands & club(s) about six inches closer to my body, bringing the club head straight back from address during my back-swing while rotating my chest completely. It's providing me with significantly more lag/compression and consistency. It only took about 15 minutes. I had one of our club pros review my swing on the driving range and what a fantastic improvement to my game. I'm really trying to get down to a 10 handicap or lower. Tee time 8:30AM

Dan, yep, that's the way these things happen... We all talk about the ones we should have kept or the ones that got away. Probably back in 96 you and your friend thought the W31 was way more money than it should be, but knew those cars would go up even more in the future as they did and still do.. I think along those lines now but I'm sure that our beloved muscle cars will continue to go up and the cars sold in 2019 will seem like a steal in 2030. ( If we're still here...) Anyway I am sure that the W31 is worth more than you paid in 96 if you do sell it. The last older car I sold was the Vista Cruiser and one before that was a 65 Coronet. I don't regret selling either of those as I had thought about it for a long time and was sure on the decision. Good luck on making your decision.

Like a cow on a flat rock down here
Norm, For a while I had the dreaded shanks, I thought I was too close to the ball but after a videoed lesson, I was going outside in. Anyway, I now practice closer [ like you,] but I put a ball between me and the ball I'm gonna hit to keep me on a better plane. So far so good
Have a great day Olds friends

Hi everyone.
Yucky, drizzly day here. I think this is keeping up through tomorrow and then nice for the weekend. When I won't be here.
So the main clown gets sent home first thing this morning, and no one knows why. One guy, who's a conspiracist, thinks it's all a sham orchestrated to mess with people. I think that's ridiculous. The second main clown also has his *** in a sling because at the dinner last week, he told a fat guy(not me), you don't look like you've missed many meals. That guy went to the foreman. Even if the first one was a hoax, it was nice for him to be gone for one day.
Dan I thought you had a Hurst. I knew you had something. I wish we could save them all.
I think it will be a stay inside afternoon. One more for me then it's off to the panhandle. I haven't been down to see my Mom for over a month.
Well okay, have a good afternoon everyone.

Time to pull the IPR valve & IPC sensor from the Ford diesel. I truly hope that resolves my misfiring issue which began rather abruptly. Sometimes the screens at the ends of these things break &/or get clogged. Working behind and under the turbo is tough - hardly any space. I think I'll probably need to remove the rear FICM mount. I had all eight fuel injectors replaced (4 on the left bank @ 110K miles & 4 on the right bank @ 132K miles) - it has 175K miles currently.
I removed the battery from the Indian over the weekend & I've been load testing it for several days. It was able to take a charge to 15.5 V. After removal of the charger, it appears to hold a steady 12.81 V on its own. The battery is two years old. It's an AGM motorcycle battery, so it's one of those smaller types (about half the size of a normal battery). There is some method (which I don't recall how to do) to test the CCA of a battery. We'll see how this plays out. I'm still suspect of the battery. I believe it is possible to lose the CCA of a battery and still maintain a steady nominal voltage. It may be the case for this battery, since when a load is applied the battery quickly discharges below 12 V which by the numbers is below 50% capacity.
41/42 Striking it really nice, just not getting the consistency needed.

I've had enough root canals thank you. About some snow? Coming down pretty good, not really supposed to stick though, due to the warm ground along the lakeshore. Greg, on the other hand might see a bit more.
Hi everyone.
Rainy and yucky again. Temp is going down and it was even colder than usual inside at work today.
So the whole thing about sending the main assclown home was a sham. Seems the lead thought he owed him some time off, but didn't want everyone to think he was getting free time. So he made everyone think he was in trouble. Also, the other assclown doesn't seem like he's going to be in any kind of trouble for his careless comment. Someday I may work with professionals again.
Jamesbo if you don't want a root canal, don't go to the dentist. I haven't been in years and guess what, I've never had a root canal.
Gonna run around and get everything together for my trip tomorrow, then go to the chiropractor, then hit the sack. It will be like work. I'll get up at O'Dark Thirty, but head south instead of north.
Hope everyone is having a good afternoon.

Yeah Dan, they said up to 3 " last night but we woke up to just a dusting. But today it has been snowing on and off all day though only maybe 1/2" as of now. But 6 oclock news says 3 or 4" tonight so we'll see. Don't like it though, not very nice for the trick or treaters.
I finished the R&R of the IPR valve & ICP sensor on the diesel. Now I can’t get one of the fuel injector wiring plugs on #8 cylinder FI. It’s kicking my A$$. Scrapes and bruises galore - May have lost a gallon of blood! I’ll take a wide open 350 sbo engine compartment any day. I may end up buying one FI and/or a wiring loom. Argh. Well at 170K miles things do wear out.
Will be on the chilly side teeing off @ 8:30AM tomorrow.
Will be on the chilly side teeing off @ 8:30AM tomorrow.
The weather affected the trick or treaters, had about 30 kids, very low turnout. Last year I was running out of candy. Tomorrow I'll be taking a sh!tload to work to unload. I'll probably fire up the snowblower this Saturday. The weather is still supposed to be wet, and I wanted to get out and mulch up the neighbors leaves that fell into my yard. Damn oak trees!
I was up @ 2:00AM when the abrupt wind-shift occurred & the temperature plummeted. 57*F here this morning w/ a 21mph breeze. Forecast high a balmy 62*F winds 15mph out of the North today tee-time 8:30AM.
We didn't get a single Holloweener. We were prepared, had the jackolanterns lit and porch light and were looking forward to some. In fact we have never had a trick or treater come to our place. Everywhere we have lived is in the country. When I was a kid I lived with my parents in Lansing and we got lots of them. Well we ended up getting about 3" of wet sloppy snow which covered the trees and made them droop. Looks pretty but UGH... I figured it would be gone fast but It lasted all day, Maybe today It will melt. I didn't get all the leaves/needles raked before the snow. I plan to finish them if it melts and dries up.
-- I plan to work on my 56 truck this winter and get the doors fixed up with door seals, window tracks, etc, etc. Boy those rubber pieces are expensive! I put all new rubber items in the Cutlass years ago and don't remember them being so pricey ! I'm just probably just more cheap and unhappy to open the wallet now than I was!!

Hi everyone.
Uneventful trip to Mom's yesterday, was nice the whole day so no drama. Actually I left early enough it was dark half the trip. Finished up all my chores already and am making notes for next time.
The place seemed to fair(fare?) okay for Halloween, it was dark so I couldn't see everything. Didn't hear anyone in the neighborhood, and it was spitting rain anyway. So what. I remember going out many a year in the rain, and snow, and wearing a heavy coat that covered up my costume. Eh, I got candy that's what I wanted. My Dad usually went with us and he'd stand on the sidewalk and we kids would go up to the house. My friend told me he always has candy for the kids and cocktails for the parents.
So here's a question I keep forgetting to ask. What should I do about corrosion that is forming under the clear coat on my aluminum wheels? I see it a lot on foreign cars but corrosion is just starting on the wheels on the black truck. Am I doomed to have crappy looking wheels or can I fix it somehow? Blast them with the aluminum oxide and then polish and recoat? These are the then high dollar wheels that came from the factory.
Dinner tonight with the family then headed out early tomorrow. Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

Everyone seems to be in such a hurry to scream 'prejudice' these days................
A customer asked, "In what aisle can I find the Polish sausage?"
The clerk asks, "Are you Polish?"
The guy, clearly offended, says, "Yes I am. But let me ask you something.
If I had asked for Italian sausage, would you ask me if I was Italian?
Or if I had asked for German Bratwurst, would you ask me if I was German?
Or if I asked for a kosher hot dog would you ask me if I was Jewish?
Or if I had asked for a Taco, would you ask if I was Mexican?

The clerk says, "No, I probably wouldn't."
The guy says, "Well then, because I asked for Polish sausage, why did you ask me if I'm Polish?"
The clerk replied, "Because you're in Home Depot.

Feels like winter here. Went out yesterday and put away old truck, then started to work on converting a used furnace from Natural gas to propane to eventually heat the shop. Too cold for that! As long as I was moving around it was fine, but to sit was too cold, so I came back to the house. I guess I will try it again today with some warmer coveralls. I wish I could have gotten the furnace installed when it was still warm out...
