Mornin all.
Scot, Mike, Around here I've been able to buy some old R-12 for about $10-15 per can So it's still cheaper than a conversion. I have a few cans left for Brit and the hoopdee when they need a little top off. Brit has been really solid since I replaced the compressor front seal. I assume this is each. http://cosprings.craigslist.org/pts/5120368285.html
Allan, Sorry to hear about the Diabetes. hope you can get adjusted to the changes. Hope everything goes well for the kid.
Jagwhire, that is a pretty car.

Mornin,
Allan, fingers crossed for your son
Jim what is a "sho nuff truck farmer"?
Clint, I do not usually ask, but any thoughts about the x5 losing oil mysteriously? The darn thing runs great....think I will just keep putting oil in it, it looks nothing like an Olds under there
Have a good day

I think there may be a breakdown for this, but I know it's rare. For instance the 442 convertible in '70 they only made 48 of them. I wish I could help more. Maybe start a thread (if you haven't already) and someone will chime in as to whether or not that info was saved on the Cutlass Supreme transmission breakdown for '70
Jim, type 2. I'm still learning about it. Ya might be right about de okrie. I already lost 20 lbs an did a lifestyle change fer diet. Guess I need to expand the exercise portion.
Thanks all for the support.
I'll pass along the good luck wishes for the boys driving test.

This might apply to other years? BMW/Audi/Subaru oil consumption: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/consum...ail&soc_trk=ma
Ted, I just googled the oil consumption problem you were describing. Hope you're sitting down. BMW claims that a quart of oil every 750 miles (1200 km) is completely normal and expected with some of their models. Also depends on transmission and driving 'style'. I would ask your local BMW dealer if the consumption you're experiencing is typical? Hope Clint can find something better for you.
BTW, Audi had a class action suit filed against them for this and had to extend warranty rights. Subaru also says 1000 miles or less for a quart of oil is reasonable...sheesh! At that rate of consumption you'll never have to change it, just keep pouring the expensive stuff in. Too bad the car is now 15 years old. I doubt the BMW dealer will offer much except to pick your wallet clean.

The sad thing is they say that this is normal! The Oldsmobiles that I drove 40 years ago did not come close to this, I might be down a qt. between oil changes, but at that time that was every 5-7000 miles. From 2000 to 2007 I had a '98 Chevy Lumina with the 3.1L V-6, It would use about one quarter of a quart...8oz. between changes, every 5k miles, I traded it in when it had 140,000 miles on it. My lowly Chevy apparently had better tolerances.
Nope thats what I found as well. What weight are you using? You might try a little heavier weight and see if that helps. Later engines are using a very low tension piston ring to reduce friction and improve economy. They let more of the oil stay on the cylinder and burn away with each power stroke and slowly use oil but not at a rate that you can see it. That along with the really light weight oils causes this concern.
That's an interesting observation Clint. By comparison - In the owners manual of my 07 Sonata it says to use 5W20, but it also says that in the summer I can use either 5W30 or 10W30. Since I never have to add to that car, I use synthetic 5W-20 all the time. At the price of synthetic I would really hate to be adding a quart every 700 miles.
I was under the impression that the BMW's had pretty tight engines. I'm not sure how that applies to a car that's 15 years old though. I know the Saturn is definitely not a tight 1.9. Right now I'm using 10W30 in it for the summer and that seems to have a good effect. Oil change in the fall I'll put the 5W30 back in and change the filter.
Ted, if it's going to continue slurping oil I'd make sure I'm using cheaper dinosaur brand instead of synthetic.

Hi everyone.
Break time. I've been busting my hump(and it's hump day!) getting the truck in shape. Got the oil changed and greased, cleaned out, and I'm going to wash it here in a minute. Nothin' like a clean truck. And a black one at that. I should wax it. Nah.
I read some time in the 90s that Ford said a quart every 300 miles was normal for their engines. How could they even say that with a straight face? If I'm remembering correctly Ford in the 70s had problems with their engines grinding themselves to death, so Atlantic-Richfield came up with ARCO Graphite oil specifically for them.
Dave welcome. That's a beautiful car. You can't go wrong with dark blue on a Cutlass. I've got a 4 speed Supreme, though I'm guessing you have me beat for rarity.
Jamesbo I'm picturing you in a wide brim hat picking vegetables. Sounds like fun, actually.
Okay back to fun of my own.

afternoon
Sammy, I have a big garden 2- 50' rows of orkie, same with bush beans, squash etc and maybe 50 maters
A "sho nuff truck farmer " what grows to sell like my friend has 100 yard rows of stuff. Like 500 mater plants and 6- 100 yard rows of Okrie.Which I picked dis mawn'in cause all his neighbors are helping out while he's on de mend.
FWIW 6 100 yards rows of okrie gave me a new appreciation fer paraquat. My friend is in his 80's a usually does it all by himself to make a living. He's a better man than I, I think I'd be selling pencils on de sidewalk.
Mike, I'll let you have a turn at de "FUN" TOMORROW.
He's a book written about him

Hi everyone.
Busy day. And, surprise surprise, I got everything done I needed to. And my neighbor came over and helped me get the pool into my truck. So I'm a happy guy.
Was beautiful and hot all day, and now it is raining. Not hard, just enough to be annoying. Wasn't sure if I heard thunder or not. The planes are pretty low by the time they get to this point. The dogs were freaked as soon as it started getting dark.
Jamesbo my fun tomorrow will be sitting in a car for 9 hours. I used to think I-80 across the plains was dull, but I-75 has got it beat hands down. One good thing, once I get to Lexington, I can stop at White Castle.
So it seems that R12 is going for about 30 bucks a can on ebay. Clint or Scot, how much does a typical system need? I'm in for 100 if it keeps things cool and correct. I liked the disclaimer some of the people had. You have to fax them a copy of your EPA license before you could buy it, or fax them a letter saying you don't have a license, but you plan on reselling it to someone who does. Some people just said you have to have a license, some said buying this implies that you have a license, and others said nothing about it at all.
John must really be getting the honey-do's done with Better Half away. We haven't heard from him for a few days.
Well I guess I'll call my Mom and then make it an early night. Hope everyone has a good evening.

Good morning everyone.
Another beautiful morning. Not sure what the temp will be today, not sure I care. I'll be in Ohio by this evening. I'll care what the temp is there.
Thanks Scot. Four pounds? Looks like I'm in for 200. That's okay. I can't imagine the conversion kit is too cheep.
Was gonna go to bed early last night, ended up talking on the phone for two hours. Then my boy gets me up a half hour before the alarm goes off. Eh, sleep is overrated.
Okay gonna take the dogs with me to the Awful house and drop them off at the kennel right when they open. They are right next to one another.

Mornin.
Thanks for the input on the BMW. I am running 5/40 synthetic. Can I add 10/30 when it gets low again.? I heard that you should not mix the two.I have it on the hoist and it is quite the machine under there. Some oil is leaking the pwer steering sump but nothing to worry about, and I am not chasing the problem.
. Besides, gotta work on the Olds
Allan, congrats to your son! I would complain about having to taxi Matthew around, now I kinda miss it.
Dan, my Mazda 3 and Furd PU have never needed oil between changes and they have the same mileage as the BMW: ty for the link
Clint, think I will just return to the oil I used growing up...10 in the winter and 10/30 in the summer.
Jim, cool article. Not many guys like that around anymore!

Good Thursday Mawnin
Yep Mike I'd love to get a drum of that R12 @ $200 but I have got to get some R22 so I can make some scratch. Conversion kits at the Chinesium part stores are cheap enough, BUT... do they work? I personally do not know. Probably not as they are no where near "doing it right" In the residential a/c business, one expansion valve does not work correctly with a different refrigerant. The sensing bulb has the refrigerant that it is designed to work with in it. Two different oils don't jive together well and do more harm than good in the compressor. What you don't want in the system either is air or moisture, as a compressor cannot compress either very well or at all for that matters.
Yep Jamesbo inflation
Ted I wouldn't mix the two oil weights. A simple oil and filter change will allow you to try a different weight.

Hi goodbye.
Got the dogs squared away and had some breakfast and talked with people I hadn't seen in awhile, and now I'm ready to hit the road. It's sad at home without the dogs here.
Scot I read that when R12 started getting expensive that people would put R22 into their cars. Supposedly worked okay, until the R22 people caught on and raised the price on it, too. Seems to me when I worked at the auto parts store in the 80s a can of R12 was like a buck.
Jamesbo this is what we do with the swimming pool. It's folded up now in the back of the truck and when you start putting the water in it sort of "inflates" and is like a big bubble.
I'll try to check in while I'm on the road. Have a good day everyone.

Okay picture problems. Again. We drive the car into the pool, fill it with water, and the car floats. Sounds silly, but everyone loves it. Even got a mention on the local radio station last year.
Okay see ya.
Okay see ya.
